Looking to purchase an Auris. I have heard the turbo engine is good but trying to avoid the turbos. 1.6 have not really heard much about them. Avoiding 1.33 at all costs.

Both are good engines imo, the 1.6 is ultra popular and similar to 1.8 both petrol and petrol electric variants, these are reliable engines. The turbo one with manual transmission can be a little bit more fun to drive., they are not that popular here in uk and not old enough to have many problems reported or perhaps they are reliable too., there were two reports of high pressure fuel pumps give ups on 1.2t but other than that no issues. 1.6 earlier years 2010-2011 first gen Auris has vvti issues, expensive part to replace but later models has the problem been fixed so 2013 onward no worries. If it’s me I am most likely to try 1.2t. Btw if you about automatic gearbox only buy hybrid, these are the best automatics in the world currently 👍

Have you considered the hybrid Auris, or even Prius if you have an older family or regularly carry four?

Hi there, I would think with the turbo it would be even more paramount to have a full sevice history, preferably with a dealer and then you would know the correct oil spec had been used. We have had a 2013 1.6 Auris for about 9 months and it has performed perfectly whatever the weather. The car has done around 5000 miles so far and hasn`t used a drop of oil. Initially, it was achieving 40 mpg brim to brim for a mix of heavy traffic, dual carriageway and country road. Currently, that has dropped to just over 36 mpg, perhaps due to colder weather/E10 petrol. The `zoom` factor is nothing special but for an ordinary A to B drive it is perfectly adequate. I`m perhaps harsh there as we also have a 2.0 turbo diesel  and a 6 cylinder Subaru which it was never going to be able to compete with for `pull`. I find it very light in the steering but again that`s personal preference. All in all, going by our experience I would say if you`re looking for a reliable but not particularly exciting drive the 1.6 would be a very good choice.

The 1.6 is generally assumed to be more reliable; We haven't had enough people with the 1.2T to really know how reliable it is, but it seems to be okay generally. Will likely need more looking after to stay in top condition, and I'd be leaning to bi-annual oil changes instead of annual ones.

Driving-wise, the 1.6 is a fairly normal jappy engine, and is okay but the power tends to be at the top end so it needs revving.

The 1.2T has been set up more like a diesel, with the torque coming in at quite low RPMs so it feels a lot more powerful than the 1.6.

Be worth looking at other manufacturers too - Toyota's strengths are in its hybrids, but e.g. the Hyundai i30 and Kia Ceed are solid alternatives in the same class for normal petrols, and tend to have more stuff.

I recently faced a similar dilemma and eventually opted for a 1.2T. It simply felt light years ahead in terms of both power/torque and smoothness. I don't doubt that it is a more stressed engine and will likely not last as long and/or take more looking after. However as I don't plan on running the car for 10+ years and hundreds of thousands of miles this is of absolutely no concern to me whatsoever.

It will be run for several years, was bought approved used and so is warranted by Toyota and will then be serviced by them and so benefit from the Relax Warranty for the duration of my ownership.
