Can't stand BSM or LTA, they need to be OFF for me, I have managed to look over my shoulder for 45 years of driving, will carry on doing so

LTA is a pain in the backside.

A pain in the arms I find 🙂

It's forever twitching or trying to sit on the (wrong) edge of a lane. So if it's active I'm forever fighting it. If I relax and let it do its thing I then get chided for not holding onto the wheel.

For BSM I bought a couple of adhesive convex mirrors. I stuck the first one on my last car where it stayed for nearly four years. The second one went on this Corolla when I got it home and has stayed on for over three years.

£4 for two and as @Catlover posted they are better than a BSM because I no longer have a blind spot.

It could be said you need someone to give you nudge to remind you to look. 😎

Interesting topic. I just took my car in for a minor paint repair and was given a 21 plate Yaris hybrid as a courtesy car. The pedestrian alert was going off every few seconds. It reacted to parked cars, traffic islands and once to a pedestrian who was 3/4 across the road. Got back into my own car which has only once to my memory alarmed in traffic and nothing no alerts or anything along the same route. In my opinion the Yaris was a pain in the backside and was sensitive to the point of being undrivable with braking and beeping every few minutes

On the subject of bodywork, it is VITALLY important that if you have a bump that involves any damage to the bumper or panel work that the ADAS is re-programmed. There is a chance that these services will not work after accident work unless the system is recalibrated. This is where the small body shops cannot repair cars properly, it literally is an accident waiting to happen if not recalibrated

An annoying trend in cars is by making them 'safer' they're making the visibility worse - The Yaris has shown a marked decrease in driver visibility from the Mk1 to the Mk4. I'm glad the Mk4 has so many sensors as if you look over your shoulder what you mostly see is B and C-pillar!!

Thank smeg it has a reversing camera as the rear view barely qualifies!

I remember reading news about Toyota patenting a novel design for A-pillars that would make them practically invisible without compromising on structural safety - Where is it?? I really wish the Mk4 had this, as the A-pillars are so obstructive they can hide entire approaching cars, esp. on roundabouts!

Not really safety which is a major factor in the reduction in glass area. Weight is probably more of an issue to the manufacturer as glass is heavier than sheet steel.

Our Yaris is going in tomorrow for the Radar recall. When I was called by the garage today to confirm the booking they said ECU refresh so perhaps it is a intelligence update to reduce the false positives.

Alas not very likely - Apparently on some cars the radar isn't working properly and the car doesn't stop or slow down like it should when approaching another car, so the fix would be more to fix a false negative than the false positives.

I'm using mine extensively (The journey home can be veeery boring, esp. right now as it's the beginning of April Budget Roadworks Hell) so I hope mine isn't affected!! (While I would like my Mk4 to be a foot shorter to make it easier to park, I don't want to do it in such an abrupt way  )

Interestingly the recall doesn’t show up on our MyT so maybe our car is ok. Ours appears to react fine when using Adaptive Cruise.

Have you used the Toyota Recall checker to make sure?

It was the Toyota recall checker that said it was needed, just silly me I thought MyT would alert me too.

Each separate importer decides what specs including safety features, they wish to offer for their market area. So it is down to Toyota GB as to which features they want on cars they sell.

Understand this too... but still a short-sighted error to include safety packages across all models across the globe as standard... then allow the driver to switch off those they do not wish to use (like LTA).  Better to have and not use than not have and could have used.

Yes it's all down to cost but if safety paramount then why not go the extra mile and have all as standard?

It’s what is needed to get a high ncap score. Above that, they are going to charge you.

Not factually correct - safety systems differ across markets, and not all markets have Toyota T-Mate or Toyota Safety Sense. For example some Asian and South American markets have fewer safety systems than European markets.

Systems like LTA aren't compulsory currently in Europe, so presumably that is why manufacturers allow these to be turned off if the driver wishes. Hyundai and other manufacturers are the same.

Cyker "remember reading news about Toyota patenting a novel design for A-pillars that would make them practically invisible without compromising on structural safety -"

I don't know how novel, but SAAB had near invisible A pillars.  These were massive steel beams from low down in the wheel bays. They had a narrow tapered profile and gave excellent visibility.  An essential part was to reduce the thickness of the padding too without compromising safety.

I saw a similar technique in at 19th C Manor House.  The window pane frames were barely half an inch wide by over 1.5 inches deep.  They allowed much more light compared  to modern PVC frames.

Well, whatever the technique they need to do something - With the current trend future cars will be like the Spectrum Pursuit Vehicle from Captain Scarlet! (i.e. no windows at all. Also you're seated backwards. For safety. )

All the automated assist systems are way to sensitive... I've chosen the lowest sensitivity level for all of them.

The LNA has tried already two times to crash into the barriers when the acceleration lane is ending. It's not a drastic reaction and probably will never be so strong to counter act your own strength while holding the wheel, but it's not fun, at all...

Yeah you need to re-train yourself to use your signals when changing lanes, merging etc. - Then it won't do that.
