Alternator Replacement

Hi guys,

I've found what my whining sound was. It's the alternator bearing (even though it was only fitted 5 months ago! :ffs: ).

As I've never done this before.... how easy is the alternator to remove?

A complete B*STRD to remove mate!

It cost me loads to get mine replaced when it went, got one from fensport, and it cost about £180 to get it fitted. Toyota were quoting £400 odd!

don't know about the turbo, but on my n/a it was easy 30min job, take off wheel, to get to bolt that holds it on, undo it nad the belt adjuster unplug then wiggle it out the top :)

It may be because my NA is the 3S-FE, but apparently it was a few hours for the job at my local garage?!?!

Took a look at it this afternoon. I can only just about see the damn thing, never mind get a spanner on it to get it off! :ffs:

Dont talk about alternators...mine went on the drive home just after buying the car!! My mate had a mare dropping it out. Then the replacement alternator went, crappy recon unit- and so we had to go through the whole process again!

But he only charged me an hours labour because hes a good mate!

Earl - I get all my work done by Kevin Clarkson in Droitwich (he did my engine transplant for me). I know it's a fair way to drive but he does the job and doesn't charge a fotune. He's an indepenent Toyota specialist - you can get him on 01905 778368. I know he's away for a few days starting tomorrow but try giving him a ring anyway and don't forget to tell him I sent you :P

first of all you need to unbolt the alternater from the bracket that is bolted to the block. undo the top bolts (can be done with a spanner or small ratchet) pull off the belt then push the alternator down and undo the rest of the bolts. most of this can be done from the top of the car. disconnect the earth cable and the main connector. Once this is done put the altornater to on side of the engine block as you have to unbolt the main bracket. you may hve to climb right underneath the car. Its a nighmare but it can be done, once you have unbolted the bracket you can pull it out from the bottom of the car then attempt to pull the alternator out from the bottom as well. make sur you have the car on axle stands, otherwise as well as needing an alternator you will need a hospital as well as they are not the lightest of cars. If you go to a recon specialist they will repair it for about £100. and should be under warrenty. we got ours done for £100 and a 3 year warrenty from Auto Electrical Rescue in Clavering(essex) and next day.
