Yaris or Yaris Cross ?

Tony - I think by now u probably have decided from the responses on here. Unless u need the boot space and higher seating position of the cross. The standard Yaris wins on all other departments.

For my own debate: I was very set on a corolla 2.0 excel pan roof JBL. But weighting up the different factors in, the Yaris excel tech pack is what I'm looking at this moment. It will be a big improvement from my MK3 Yaris icon for sure. Couple of gripes I have with the MK3 icon model were small tyres, body leans in corners and lacks power and noisy on rapid acceleration on duals/motorway/country roads.

The MK4 Yaris excel has 205 size tyres which is what I wanted from a small car, also chassis is 37% stiffer than previous model, so cornering will be very good. More power and less engine noise are very good. 42m % PCP from Toyota is also very good.

You'll love it - The driving dynamics of the Mk4 are soooo much better than the Mk3.

I was very interested in the Mk3 when it came out as nobody had made a small hybrids at that time, but was put off because they'd de-Yaris'd it (No sliding rear seats, no digital dash, only one glove box!?), it felt really out of its depth at speed or any kind of load, and it was less efficient than the Mk1 diesel I had at the time while being significantly more expensive.

The Mk4 has fixed all the things I didn't like about the Mk3  and has put the joy back into driving that I'd missed since I had to get rid of the Mk1 D4D (KHAAAAN!). It isn't particularly quick, but the burst-acceleration at any speed is addictive and is like driving an EV. They've also really worked on the handling - In the Mk3 they tried to fix the Yaris-wallow but instead of fixing the suspension setup they just made it stiffer so while it didn't roll as much as the Mk1 and Mk2 the ride was far worse.

The Mk4's handling is almost Fiesta-like compared to the previous models - It rides bumps well but still corners really well too. I do feel the extra weight of the car (It's near 200kg heavier than my previous ones...!), but it still corners far better than it has any right to. The work they put into the suspension and TNGA platform really shine out in this car. It's so confidence-inspiring on twisty roads compared to previous Yarisusueseis (although this isn't always a good thing if you have rubbish tyres  )

It does have many flaws, but you don't care about them because the car is just so damned nice to drive. I can't say enough good things about it!

I had a mk1 1.3 GLS previously and missed the digital speedo that the MK3 didn't have. From videos of reviews of the MK4 and comments from everyone are it's vastly improved from the MK3.

Digital speedo returns and much tech added, heated and folding mirrors were what I wanted along with many items like led light, auto dimming mirrors, HUD, it's got so much good things available akin to a bigger car. 205 tyres, stiffer chassis and 116hp will resolved all the gripes I have with my MK3 😀

While they are by no means ugly, they can be quite colour sensitive (I will not expand on this!!!)

Hi to both of you.

Currently still trying to decide between a Yaris (Excel; the 2024 model) and Corolla (Design). The Corolla is 7k€ more (+28%) so I am still trying to decide which would be the better option. I will do <15km/year, of which ~60-70% should be in the highway (1h trips to work).

Since you both have long experiences with both cars, could you provide an update regarding both in terms of ride comfort (including seats), noise and handling?

I have heard a lot of praise for the Corolla ride and seat comfort, not sure if the Yaris is much worse or not, particularly in the higher trims (bigger wheels but leather sport seats which look similar to those in the Corolla).

If you don't need the space of a corolla then go for the yaris. I have the Yaris design it does a very good job travelling even longer distances. Did a 240 miles return day trip in the summer, it was a breeze.

Seat for the design spec isn't good for my lumbar, so I bought a lumbar support cushion.

Corolla is much better car imo. It’s larger heavier with slightly longer wheelbase, wider track and independent rear suspension, all that only contributes to smother drive and overall plusher experience. Could also have better sound proofing too.
The seats of Corolla design are exactly the same shape as Yaris excel, how comfy they are in each I don’t know as I never tried either of these, Corolla gr and excel has very comfortable sport seats , these I have tired and they are very supportive, only little bit harder on the side bolsters.

I must admit I don't get on with the stupid 'Sport Seats' in my Mk4 (Seriously Toyota, Sports Seats? In a Yaris? A Yaris *Hybrid*?? What were you thinking!?), and if there's one thing I'd change it would be to change the seats for one with better lumbar support.

At the moment I'm alternating between a wadded up towel and a slightly-too-hard-now-that-it's-cold memory foam cushion for my lower back.

I know Tony says the Corolla and Yaris seats are the same, and they do look very similar, but having sat in both I will say the Corolla seats are more comfortable and I think they have adjustable lumbar support too (At least the ones I've sat in have!)

it basically depends on what you want out of the car -

The Yaris is punchier, more agile, and more economical than the Corolla

The Corolla is more comfortable, and I suspect would be much nicer to be in for long periods/journeys. It also has significantly better interior sound insulation than the Yaris (Which at times can sound like you've left a window open even when you haven't  )

The Yaris suits me well because my driving is split between crawling through traffic and meandering through narrow city roads, and hooning about on twisty high speed country roads - It absolutely excels at both of these things.

However, I do sometimes find myself wondering what the Corolla would be like when I'm cruising up the M1 at 60mph for 2+ hours with my lower back aching increasingly

Posted this in the wrong thread last night due to tiredness.

Corolla is one class above so will be the better comfort car. If space isn't too important then the Yaris is the one that makes financial sense. Could even opt for the Yaris 130.

I too was weighing up the pros and cons of Yaris v Corolla 2.0 before I chose the Yaris as that makes the most financial sense for my overall use of the car. To add, the extra space, quality and power of the corolla would be nice as well as better for longer distances. Those things were not a frequent criteria for my usage.

Essentially whether the OP need the space for carrying a full load. 15k per annual isn't high, nor there is a huge amount of motorways.

Thank you all. Difficult decision... would prefer the Corolla, but am finding it hard to justify the price difference.

As a Yaris owner who test drove a Corolla 1.8 Excel before placing our order, driving at motorway speeds it was quieter than our Yaris even with the 18" wheels shod with Falkens compared to our Yaris Design with 16" wheels and Cross Climate 2 tyres (quieter than the factory Continentals).

However the 1.8 Excel appears to have an under bonnet mat that is not present on lower trims.  I don't know if there is any other additional sound deadening.  When our Corolla 1.8 Design HB turns up I can comment on if there is any detriment to the sound deadening.

Corolla Vs Yaris (cant speak to cross)  - I bought a 2.0 Corolla Excel with JBL, but Partner bought a Mk4 Yaris Excel with Tech Pack 6 months earlier. I have driven it a fair bit and honestly I would have been just as happy with the Yaris vs the Corolla.

Yaris plus points: BSM, RCTA, HUD (tech pack) and more room in rear - seats are way better than Mk3, nearly as good as Corolla, general feel, handling and performance way better than the Mk 3 and the 2 Auris I had previously

Corolla plus points: full "leather" (and at the time) Sat Nav onboard as well as Android Auto, IPA (which actually doesn't work well on the Corolla vs earlier Auris), Bi-LED lights (which aren't really that much better than Yaris LED), quieter on Motorway than Auris due to the glass on windows. Bigger boot space.

Honestly you need to get into the nitty gritty for me to say one over the other - kids are grown up and moved out so rear leg space not an issue, I like the 2.0 as its a sportier drive, but the Yaris Mk4 is a great car performance wise. The BSM was not a deal do miss not having the hud - the Corolla has no HSI "meter" like the Auris had, but the HUD on the Yaris means the HSI display that is available can be right in your eyeline.

If I had to choose over with hindsight, I might go Corolla GT Sport (for the HUD) ....or Yaris Mk4.

So there you go, no help at all in choosing 😁

But I would definitely go Mk4 Yaris over 1.8 Corolla

For Kental and Trashman above, since you have owned both for a while, what would be your feedback?

Thank you!

My wife and I chose the Yaris Cross over the Yaris or Corolla because it's cheaper than the Corolla and has much bigger boot space than a Yaris. So I guess it's all about what's most important for you and what you need a car for.

Me too.  I did a few test drives beforehand and came to the same conclusion.  I also found the Corolla very low on the road - even lower then my Mazda 6 which I drove immediately before the test drives, it felt like I was sitting on the road

I saw a Yaris cross in the wild today.

That's if it was one,it looked pretty big to me, more like rav 4 size compared to my Yaris mk1.

Are these on a bigger Toyota's platform?

Two local driving schools have started using the Yaris Cross as a learners car.

I moved from Corolla to Yaris Cross.  I find more useable luggage capacity.  Better seating position.   My next car will be another Cross.

Yeah they look massive! Even the non-Cross Mk4 looks pretty big from certain angles. I'd gotten used to mine, until I parked next to a Mk1 and then realized how big it is again, esp, from behind!

flash22's right that it has a gigantic saddlebag butt

It's funny when you see an OG RAV4 - It's so small compared to the new RAV4 and even the Cross!

It still baffles me how the Mk4 is so big but has less internal space than the Mk2... A lot of it is probably the insane amount of structural reinforcement (Certified Evoque resistant  ), but still! :confused1:

Y cross is like the size of an earlier generation of the rav4. In 2-3 years I would be moving from a Yaris to most likely, a Yaris cross.

Do you find the Corolla significantly more comfortable (ride and seats) and significantly better insulated than the Cross? I have tried both the Cross and the regular Yaris and found the regular less noisy than the Cross (comfort I could not tell the difference). I was wondering whether the Corolla would be worth the upgrade if comfort and and refinement are key criteria (more so than space).

I think about comfort and refinement will depend on which trim levels we compare. Toyota has this idea to make their top trim cars better with better materials, extra sound proofing, different windows, etc and all that changes the overall experience. My Auris top spec is as good as Lexus inside, where if you compare to Auris  mid range or entry level same year they look the same but when you start touching the plastics you realise the difference, and as a result the top spec one is way better to drive , quieter, smoother, the seats feels like more comfortable too, just  nicer to be inside.

And if we are talking about learners cars , honestly Yaris mk4 and cross are getting very popular, particularly in north and northwest London.
I often see 5 or more of these at one roundabout.
There are also Corolla’s but not as much. I think Yaris is the best for learner car as is the smallest of all and will be most preferred by more  students and particularly girls, they often call Corolla a big car and get scared of its size., although Yaris cross is very similar, even look slightly bigger but actual it is not.
New LBX might be a good choice too.

Smaller than a Corolla certainly but I still have difficulty judging the space on front of the car.

I would guess they will be the lowest spec but how easy to convert from a new modern specced car with reversing camera to an older bare model?

"think Yaris is the best for learner car as is the smallest of all and will be most preferred by more  students and particularly girls,"

Yaris but not the Cross, as for men, do you think a Yaris has street cred?

Anyway, as a 6th former my grandson planned to do an intensive driving course and take his test at 17.  With the Covid backlog and as a student in a city that has been put on a back burner.  I dont think he is alone with that plan.
