update and new question

Hello Again.

Firstly a THANK YOU to CYKER & FLASH22 for your recent help regarding my petrol filling problem on my old Verso. The filler tube and breather pipe were both horribly corroded so I had them replaced.

Secondly: When I start the car on cold, damp mornings and switch the lights on I get a kind of quiet squealing noise. It's a little like a belt slipping. Alternator? But when my mechanic replaced the petrol pipe (above) I asked him to replace the belt at the same time. It's still making the same noise though. Any thoughts please?

Thank you

Jonty

The squeak is likely to be a bearing in either the alternator, water pump, idler or tensioner -you should be able to find it with a mechanics stethoscope

The most common cause of cold-engine squeal in the Mk1 Yaris is by far the aux belt. If it goes away when the engine gets warm I suspect that is the culprit. You can also spray a bit of water/WD40 onto it to see if that makes it go away - If it does, definitely the cause.

If the mechanic used a cheap belt and/or didn't tension it properly it could still be the cause - A lot of the cheaper third-party belts use cheap rubber which are very prone to squealing.

I had that problem something chronic in my old 1.4 D4D and it was like a cat had been trapped in the engine it was squealing/screeching so loud! Took out the old belt and gave all the pulleys a good clean and fitted a new Toyota belt -  supplied by our very own PartsKing IIRC! - and it was fine ever since!

I'd strongly advise you NOT to spray WD40 on it, it contains oil!

It might take away the squeal, but almost certainly will make the belt slip under load and acceleration.
