Am I missing something as I can't see any new topics when I come onto forum but new to this so probably me being thick

Yes you are missing something.
As I am looking at this page …… I go to the top right and see 4 symbols. The one on the left looks like a couple sheets of text. Press that and you will see all the posts in black print, those are the posts (new topics) you have not read.              
Enjoy trying to keep up with the quantity. 🤪

If you're viewing the Forums page in mobile mode, do as Joe says.

If viewing in Desktop mode the new topics will be listed in the Topics column to the right of the page.

There is also the "Latest Posts" button, top right just above the Topics box 👍

 

If you have declined cookies or in private mode, it will not remember what you have/have not read
