LTA tends to keep the car closer to the left side of the lane

Hi guys,

Just had a longer trip with LTA and I noticed it doesn’t keep you in the centre of the lane, it tends to keep you more to the left side (RHD). I don’t personally like it, do you know if there is a way to adjust this behaviour using Techstream?

What type of road was this?

I felt the same, switched it off, and don't use LTA. I noticed the problem particularly on country lanes where the verge was less distinct and it seemed to be tracking the ditch or hedge-line instead. Alternatively, it was doing what it should and I just prefer to be closer to the centre-line.

It was a motorway, nothing wrong with lanes, and it makes sense as you should actually stick more to the side, but with LTA I would prefer the car to keep the centre of the lane. I guess LHD cars are doing opposite (keeping more to the right side of the lane), so this must be a software.

On a motorway it should really get it correct, and 'centred' seems correct to me too.

But you've confused me now ... 🙂 ... I'm in the UK with a RHD car - we drive on the left ... where are you?

I had Pilot Assist on my Volvo XC60 which kept the vehicle within road lane markings. That also favoured positioning my car close to the left lane marking which I didn't like at all, particularly on the motorway when passing vehicles. Volvo said it was behaving as per design, so I very rarely used the facility. Whilst not the exact same function as in the Rav4, it is very similar.

I never use LTA in my Rav4

I’m RHD too, it’s been 20 years ago when I passed my driving license test, but I remember instructor saying you should stay more to the side than centre of the lane, so I’m assuming LTA works as designed but I don’t like it. I’m coming from Tiguan which used to keep me in the centre of the lane, so I find LTA logic weird.

It’s not the end of the world though, but if you would split the lane in 5 parts, the car tends to stay in the second part from the left.

That's funny - My Mk4 does the opposite -Keeps it dead centre, but I want to keep it more to the left!!

I was thinking to myself the other day, I wish you could use the controls on the steering wheel to adjust the LTA position left or right slightly.

I have to keep an eye on it anyway as it's very easily confused by tar snakes and junctions - The amount of times it's slightly swerved me toward the edge of the road has taught me it's definitely an aid and not a real autopilot!!

I'm just glad I can flick it on and off with a button while still keeping the radar cruise control on (Let's see you do that in a Tesla without going through a bunch of menus!)

I’ve reported exactly the same issue and found it particularly unnerving when the motorway hard shoulder is sectioned off with concrete barriers.  I’ve also noted that it has a tendency to cycle between the lane marking again not pleasant when passing high sided vehicles.

I do not use this mode.

Yeah I can imagine the extra width of the RAV4 makes it a lot more unnerving! The nice thing about the Yaris on the motorway is I've got a couple feet either side of me in the lane to react if it does anything weird...!

@Cyker, certainly with the RAV there’s not a lot of space especially with some of the road works and narrow lanes, even at 60mph (88ft/sec) things seem to happen all too quickly.

Yeah, and these smart motorway conversions that go on for years certainly aren't helping! (I thought they'd stopped because of the increase in accidents, but they still seem to be starting new ones!!)

Both my RAVs LTA in the centre no problem. Perhaps some people need recalibrating.
