Auris gearbox query

Hi  - I'm trying to replace the gearbox on my daughter's Auris 2008 T3 5 speed 1.4 D-4D diesel hatchback (variant NDE150(H)). I thought I'd found the correct gearbox at a scrapyard, but it turns out that whilst many of the reference numbers are the same, there's a fundamental difference in the gearbox - the number of teeth at the differential where the driveshafts go in. The original driveshafts have twenty teeth, but the new gearbox has 23.

The old and the new gearbox both have 31115-02020 stamped on the inside of the bellhousing, and the number 489 on the outside - there are a few other odd numbers, but nothing that looks meaningful. The only difference is the teeth as I did have it mounted back onto the engine, gear lever cables attached, and everything seemed ok until I went to put the driveshafts back in. What I am trying to find out is whether I do have completely the wrong gearbox, and if so how can I tell which one I need (other than counting the teeth). Also, I did wonder if I just needed to get two different driveshafts, but concerned that might just cause problems at the other end fitting onto the stub axles.

Any help/advice would be gratefully received.

Many thanks.

31115-02020 is just the part number for the case

the gearbox number should be on the bell housing lower (17 digit), also there is a type A (Toyota) or B (No marking)

Edit, there are 2 gearboxes listed, a C53 and C50

Edit 1, looked up the inner CV's petrols use a 23 tooth diff diesels use the 20 tooth - the diesel run a different ratio and are rated to a higher torque

Hi Flash22 - thanks for the response.

I've just been out to try and find the 17 digit number you mentioned on the lower half of the bellhousing, but without success - even using a torch and magnifying glass. Can you be more specific about where it should be? Also, am I right in assuming I'll find out whether it's C53 or C50 once I locate the 13 digit code?

Many thanks, much appreciated.

Flash22 - just seen your edit, and so that means I definitely need a different gearbox rather than switch driveshafts. I'll keep looking for that 13dig number, and check with next scrapyard I visit - I'll count the teeth too!!

Many thanks, much appreciated.

You could change the inner CV cups to the 23 spline ones, undo the cv boot and the joint slides apart

it may only be the later ones with the 17 digit number, But the type A and B are an identifier

Ack, I hope they will let you return it for a refund!!

I was getting some stupidly high prices for a replacement 6-speed gearbox for my old Mk2 1.33 (£6-700! insanity for a 2nd hand box! Found one from a welsh scrapper for £150 in the end! :yahoo: )

Flash22 - thanks for the extra info. I'll take another look around that area tomorrow when there's some daylight. Once I get a code I might feel more confident about splitting the driveshaft, unless I find another box tomorrow.

Cyker - I paid £230 for it, but no meaningful guarantee. Not sure I'll get anything back, but you might see it on eBay shortly!!

Thanks for all your help.

The inner CV it just a slip joint with a 3 bearing tripod - the only hard bit is the messy CV grease

Make sure the box is from a diesel Yaris NLP90 (mk2) or Auris NDE150 (mk1) that hasn't been to the moon and back

Ok, so today I found the long numbers on the gearboxes, but the #3 still eludes me. Copious amounts of degreaser, and a nylon scrubbing brush reveals diddly squat. I'll try again tomorrow when daylight.

As for the long numbers, on the original gearbox it's P071206384, and on the "new" box it's P070608575. I'm still not sure what car the new one is really fit for, but I have a suspicion it's the Yaris NLP90 mentioned above (based on a conversation with a breakers yard earlier today), in which case I'll go down the new inner CV route.

Many thanks.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi - I'm pursuing the option of fitting a Yaris CV joint onto the car, but the overall joint length is 1cm shorter than the original one ie for the Auris. What I'm wondering is whether this will make the overall length of the driveshaft too short, or whether 1cm would be within the normal tolerance expected for driveshaft travel e.g. when cornering etc. Many thanks for any advice. The inner drive cups are a different size iirc

is it a UK built car, (1SB VIN) or a Jap built (JT VIN)

Hi Bob - thanks for the post yesterday. I took a good look at the new CVs and they do look a bit weedy compared to the original Auris ones so, I went back to square one, and got another gearbox yesterday. However, unfortunately, despite being sold as fitting the Auris, it doesn't. It does have 20 splines (tick), it has the correct gear change mechanism (tick), it mates with the engine (tick), but the side mountings are different from the original, and will not allow re-fitting of the original mounts. The only mount that looks ok is the one at the end of the 'box. So, it's back to the scrappydo's tomorrow. I'm hoping for third time lucky 🙂

Once again, many thanks for your help. Doughnut.
