White Smoke

Hi All, I have just recently purchased a 2006 RAV4 T180 2.2 D-4D and have noticed that randomly when accelerating the car will produce white smoke and on some occasions a huge cloud of white smoke which borders on embarrassing.  The car has been serviced religiously every year and runs as sweet as anything, I can't see any contaminants in the header tank and no milky deposits inside the oil filler, like I say it doesn't do it all the time, it's very random.  I've tried looking into this on the web and there seems to be various causes, from DPF Regens, condensation, blown head gasket and even it having a 5th injector which sprays diesel into the exhaust as part of some emissions system.  I'm just looking for a more definitive direction from some RAV4 owners.

Thanks in advance

Have you checked the engine oil hasn’t been diluted with diesel, don’t have any experience of the 2.2 engine. But just rebuilt a 2.0 d4d engine due to a blown turbo and bent con rod. and had the injector fuel leak off pipe leak diesel into the cam cover, diluting the engine oil and allowing a Diesel /engine oil vapour mixture to induction system, which caused white smoke

mine was very severe smoke due to the fact that I had allowed the engine to idle for a long time after the engine rebuild and it was quite a big leak on the pipe which literally dumped 3-4 litres of diesel into the sump

Sadly common. There is not yet universal agreement on the solution.

Hi Mark, one quick cheap thing to try is to replace the fuel filter, it could have water in it, well worth changing if you dont know the cars history!
