Overfuelling

My 1994 Carina E 2.0 GLI has a problem with overfuelling when hot, causing irregular revs and emissions off the scale. It is slightly intermittent but usually happens after idling in traffic on a hot day or when starting after the engine has got hot and cooled down a little e.g. after a motorway services stop. It clears once I get going again but this does not help with the looming MOT idle emissions test. One garage replaced plugs and HT leads with no effect. Another said there was nothing wrong with the lambda sensor and catalyst they had earlier fitted. The Toyota garage suggested a timing problem but I am not convinced. Can anyone put the pieces together?

having recently purchased an estate version of the same car you have, i noticed a diognostic port is situated in the rear of the engine bay so i would have thought if you could get it to a toyota garage when showing the symptoms you describe ,they would be able to find the fault via this port.

i would think you may have a faulty sensor somewhere ,but do'nt ask me which one!

:P

I would have thought the engine temperature sensor was the likley one. Not the one for the gauge - the one that tells the ECU the engine is at operating temperature. If it sometimes thinks its cold it could overfuel as at start-up. Just a possibility!!!

Thanks for the replies. I did take it to Toyota for diagnostics but the system is too old to identify any sensors not working, only that the temp sensor and MAP sensor had been disconnected some time. I have ordered a new temp sensor for £40 but they also said the timing belt sounded too tight - don't know if this could be causing a problem or just a whining noise. Still would be interested if anyone has had exactly the same symptoms.

I'd go with the Coolant temp.sensor for the ecu - sounds like its on its way out or you may have an air lock in the cooling system, giving a false reading to the Sensor.

Might be worth cleaning the Charcoal Evap.Cannister out aswell(mounted on the right hand side of the bulkhead low down)
