Strange clicking noise & won't start !!!

After having my Auris Hybrid 2014 Icon+ for just one day. I just went out to the car to see what the dash looks like when in the dark. pushed the Start button as usual, then it came into life & all of a sudden the dash all went blank with a strange clicking noise from behind the left of center of dash, also could hear a what I can only describe of was a lowish groaning noise from under the bonnet, plus the car won't lock the doors now. I can see the alarm light blinking. God what's going on with it, the car has been fine all day. Was going to Kew Gardens tomorrow but looks like that's out of the question.

Just checked on multimeter and only reading 6.7 v. I am going to have to run an extension lead out to it. I can open all 4 doors but boot won't open..............this is going to be tricky !!!

In some hybrids there’s a charging point in main fuse box in the engine bay. However TonyHSD or some of the Auris owners will chime in with more info.

As Bernard says there is a [+] terminal in the engine bay fusebox (Much easier to get to than the Battery!)

If you use that to power the car, you can start it and leave the car running for an hour or so and that should give the Battery enough charge to work. Just don't do too many short journeys for a while.

There is some controversy over whether you should try to charge the Battery through the [+] in the fusebox - The official dealer stance seems to be to not charge it there, only use it to supply power to the car so it can be switched on to charge itself, and charging should be done via flyleads connected to the battery directly.

However, if it's dropped so low it's 6.7v the battery might be permanently damaged and I think you might need to replace it... :sad:You'll have to see how well it holds a charge. If it keeps dying after a day then it's deffo dead. Might be able to recondition it with e.g. a ctek charger.

Thank you Cyker, I have connected to the Battery in the boot (had to climb in from back door, as soon as I connected the charger it came to life, so it certainly looks like what you and Bernard said............flat Battery. I will be having words with toyota first thing in the morning, not a happy customer. Thank you for your help👏👏

By the way, I could not see any terminals under the bonnet

Sounds like you have just bought the car from a Toyota dealership. If that’s the case you have certain statutory rights. So I would insist that they install a brand new Battery. I would advise you research those rights to be sure of your options. I would think that any (car dealership) as well as Toyota would automatically fit a new Battery.

They should honour that Bernard, I have had A GT86, CHR & a Yaris from them in the last 4 years and spent a lot of money with them, if it holds the charge overnight, I will go straight down there in the morning Guns blazing plus I have the 14 day money back guarantee.

Yeah, deffo be worth speaking to the dealer about it.

re. the under-bonnet terminal, the [+] terminal is in the fusebox, which is on the right-hand-side of the engine bay as you're looking at it.

You need to remove the black plastic cover, then there is a red plastic thing with a [+] on it towards the back of the fusebox - You can you can lift that up to expose the copper terminal for the +ve jumplead, and the -ve can just be connected to an unpainted part of the chassis (IIRC there is a handy unpainted bolt nearby that can be used)

Is worth learning where that is as it's a smegload easier to get at than the boot Battery! But hopefully you won't need to use it...!

That’s all the leverage you need, don’t accept anything less than a new Battery, it has to be AGM. Let us know what your outcome is Kevin!!. btw, have you been able to start the car and let it charge the Battery.

Thank you Bernard, I certainly will do. Battery is now on 13.6v, so should I disconnect it now to charge up the Battery ? & roughly how long should I leave it running for or to go for a short run to charge up quicker ?

Cyker, yes I saw that terminal (Red) one in there but was worried about touching it, oh thats great news then, I will swap the leads to there then after I go out for a quick run to charge up even more, thank you for that.

You don’t have to go anywhere Kevin, if the car starts and in READY mode, put the transmission in P and the car will do the rest, she will start off an on intermittently and lock her up after an hour. Be sure you have full and safe observation while the key is in the car and no one can get in and drive it away.

Yeah once you hook up the 12v pack, just get in the car, hold down the brake pedal and hit the Start button to start the car as normal - Car will show READY as normal, then you can get out and disconnect the charger and leave the car for a bit - It will charge the 12v Battery using the big traction Battery so you can just leave it, no need to actually drive it around (Well, legally you can't just leave it if it's on a public road but you get the idea).

General consensus is minimum 30mins to give the 12v a chance to get some decent charge, but because it was so low I reckon 1 hour would be better as the DC-DC converter charges the 12v slower than an alternator would while driving. Might be a bit late for that now tho', so might have to use your new bonnet starter points knowledge tomorrow to 'jump start' it again!

Edit: Err, so yeah what Bernard said
