Hi all,

No idea if this is the right place to ask but I'm hoping it is! I recently got myself a Toyota Aygo (automatic) bought it privately for three and a half grand. Within two drives I realised there was a problem - long story short the clutch was broken, my mechanic didnt know how to fix it and broke the actuator and I had to pay two and half grand to get it fixed (new clutch and new actuator) Its now apparently fixed but in low speeds is lagging and jerking a lot and take a while to accelerate and when it does it jerks. Im losing my mind and its really stressing me out to tears. Can anyone please help me at all or point me in the right direction?

I don't have an aygo, but just a thought if other owners don't recognise this as a specific/famous aygo problem - if your aygo is less than 10yrs old & <100k miles, one option could be to take advantage of the new Toyota Relax warranty system and get it serviced early at a main dealer. Although you might think this a waste/throwing more good money after bad, it will get you a year's worth of manufacturer-backed warranty from the date of the service onwards, regardless of the cars previous service history.

The obvious downside is that the main dealer may recommend a variety of other remedial work to bring it up to Toyota standard in order qualify for said warranty, but if there's a problem with the transmission, they will be able to tell you, and if they say its fine and it continues to be dodgy, then it should be warrantied (although I can't hand-on-heart say how much of the transmission is covered, as often certain parts are considered 'wear & tear' items, although that's usually more common for manuals than autos).

Just a thought as a backup option. Good luck!

Thanks for your reply - I unfortunately dont know if this would work. I bought it from facebook and its a 2012 car but I perhaps could call Toyota and see if they can give me any guidance. Im just going mad now and due to the problems am leaving to get at work at 4.45am (no joke) to make sure no cars are around so I dont cause any problems.

Couple of questions:

1) Did the mechanic who fitted the new clutch use the correct one specifically for the MMT (auto) version?

2) After fitting it did he use the diagnostic tool to recalibrate the clutch?

Both these are specific to the MMT (auto) version of the Aygo, so I'm thinking it's possible he wasn't aware of these requirements?

Even though you purchased the car from facebook you should still qualify for the relax guarantee as it applies to any Toyota vehicle that is less that ten years old and covered less than 100K miles when serviced by Toyota.  Each time it is serviced there is a one year 10k warranty applied, the idea being that if you have a car from new and always have it serviced by them you essentially get a ten year 100K warranty.  How much this would help your present problem would be debatable though as the are not going to warranty someone else's work.  Then again if they deem that the wrong parts or procedures were used you may have a claim against the mechanic that did the work.  Beware that the law would normally deem that the mechanic in question should be given the chance to correct the work.

In you shoes I would at least have a Toyota garage have a look at the car and advise on the problem, then again I am not you so you need to do whatever you are happy with.  I do wish you all the best in getting this sorted cheaply and quickly whatever path you take.

Hi,

I presume they did as they said they were a Toyota specialist? Its definitely better than it was but in low speeds it jerks so much. Ive now trusted two mechanics now and its still not fixed so have no clue what to do now - no one seems to know how to fix it and im already 2300 down 😞

Katy, you may even have rights with a private sale.  How did you pay? Get advice.

I paid via bank transfer. I have spoken to her the whole way through - shes saying she has no money and that its the 1st mechanics fault, the 1st mechanic is saying its BBA Remans fault (who he sent the actuator to) and that she sold me a faulty car, 2nd mechanic is saying its 1st guys fault and I literally have no idea what to do at this point. I just want rid of this awful car!

Contact Citizens advice.  The opinion that matters is the first mechanic regardless of what he did or didn't do.

Depending on what he says you might be advised to go to the small claims court.  I am guessing that you might only get the initial payment awarded and not the repair.

As I say, get advice.

The Relax warranty covers manufacturing faults and specifically not repairs done outside the authorised Toyota dealer network.

So in this case, as the problem is with repairs undertaken by independent mechanics, Relax wouldn't provide cover.

Buying a car privately actually gives you the least protection.

As previously said, get advice from the Citizens Advice

It's a private sale so no chance of getting any money back, it sounds like the actuator has not been setup correctly and needs recalibration

the low speed j-erk may subside once the clutch has bedded in and the ecu has adjusted, you need to take it on a long drive 50+ miles should do it

That's not a wise thing to do - check by asking don't presume.

Have you heard the saying that if you assume it makes an ASS of U and ME?

Dave, harsh.  You said 'ask' and Katy said 'they said'.

Katy also said 'presume' - that's what I was advising her was unwise.

Recalibration of the MMT mechanism is also something that flash22 has expressed concern about...

Dave, if they said it, would you then say prove it?

The jerkiness could suggest that if it has been done then maybe it needs doing again possibly because it hasn't been done correctly?

No saying prove it would be pointless as the tool doesn't keep a log, what I would suggest it getting another specialist or even dealer to redo the calibration if the jerkiness doesn't subside as flash22 suggests it could after a long drive.
