Ah that must be the 'first year' tax - The year of registration is a variable tax, a bit like the previous CO2-based tax, then it goes to a flat rate after that.

Don't know why they did that, just pointless complication.

Bargain.  Just looked it up for Aygo, £190/£165.

Quite right though, an unnecessary complication.

Not really as they get more tax for petrol/diesel/hybrid cars than the pre 2017 system.

For example, for our 2016 Aygo the vehicle tax is £0 every year under the pre-2017 system. If we bought a new Aygo it would be £190 for the first year, and then £165 for subsequent years.

Plus they also the introduced the extra payments from year 2 for cars costing over £40,000.

Frosty, what are the taxes on a new car?  Is it simply VAT? 

I can understand the 5 year higher road tax as it spread the charge over 5 years and possibly two owners.  For a first year only tax a small increment on VAT would do it.

On a new car, one pays a first registration fee (currently £55), VAT and whatever vehicle tax (road tax) is applicable.

Thank you. That just points up the absurdity.  Increase the registration fee by £10, job done.

That all makes sense, we only paid £155 in February when we purchased the Aygo but it was an ex-demonstrator so it was all ready registered so we missed the first registration charge and purchased before the rate increase.

Thing is the £40K threshold is applied when the car is first registered. If the manufacturer increases their prices between the order being placed and the car being first registered, the increased price is the one that determines whether the extra payment applies.

A few on the Rav4 club have been caught out by this.

Depends. If the car meets your needs and costs below the cliff, fine. If you need whatever pushes it over the edge, suck it up. 

If the AWD, EV SUV with sunroof, HiFi and fluffy dice come in at over the limit, then do a rigorous analysis of your needs.
