2021 Yaris emergency braking issue

I have never seen my PCS operate and wonder if it works , it's not the thing that I want to test in case it doesn't work. I was thinking of getting a large piece of cardboard and trying it. But I cannot see how it has time in an emergency to give a pre warning, if you're looking at that you are not looking at the emergency

The reaction times are fractions of a second - I think I get maybe half a second from the BRAKE!!! warning to the AEB slamming the brakes on; Usually I've already steered the car away or stopped it anyway (Because I can drive you stupid car!!), or it realizes there's nothing actually there and beeped for nothing and the warning just beeps a few more times before shutting off and pretending nothing's happened.

When it does kick in it's extremely violent - Enough to knock the wind out of you against the seat belt. It's amazing how quickly modern cars can bring themselves to a dead stop, even on a wet road!

There is slightly different behaviour depending on what gear the car has - Cars with the factory proximity sensors are much more twitchy at close range than the ones that just have the mandatory ADAS sensor pod on the windscreen.

Well, I’ve only had my new Cross Design(safety pack) for about a month and can agree that the autonomous braking is a real pain!

I’ve not had any “BRAKE” warnings or emergency stops yet, but parked cars always seem to cause the auto brake to operate and trying to overtake trucks while towing a trailer (speed limit 60) on motorways requires almost military planning. The damned car won’t let me get close enough so I have to pull out far too soon and that REALLY annoys following centre lane hoggers 🙄

These systems seem to be designed by idiots for morons that can’t drive 😡

To be fair that shouldn't be too big an issue - The new drivetrains in the Yaris and Yaris Cross pickup speed really quickly if you give it the beans :naughty: :whistling1:

Great solo, but with my 71 year old motorbike on a trailer behind me I’m not booting it up to 75 + 😂

I guess I will just have to let the car win and follow the trucks at 56 🤔

Oh I missed that, yeah, it's less sprightly when carrying/pulling a heavy load

On the bright side, 56mph is a speed the engine likes and will deliver very nice/conciliatory/consolatory mpg :naughty:

Bear in mind that these systems are intended to reduce the severity of a collision - it's a safety system, the outcome of the car is not relevant. Avoiding a collision is icing on the cake.

Stopping distance (ie. safe distance to follow another vehicle) has nothing to do with how much faster you can go than the other vehicle. Most people drive far too close anyway which is why there are so many multiple pileups in poor weather. Ignore the idiots behind - you have every right, indeed obligation, to pass safely. (And when past you should not pull back in until your trailer is beyond the safe distance from whatever you passed.)

(And that's something that Ts me off. On a fairly empty Mway/DC at 70mph or so and someone passes me and then pulls straight back into my lane about a car length in front. There's nothing behind them for hundreds of metres or more. WTF? (Well I guess TF is brainless moron.))

I haven’t tried one of these latest safety technology cars but I do see every day how poor are driving standards so autonomous cars is the only way to fix this problem. The change however should start from public transport- autonomous busses, taxis, then private cars.
The problem we have on the roads these days aren’t the cars but the drivers.
Sorry if anyone gets offended here but what I see on the roads every day look like a war front not “an intelligent people way of travelling”. 🫢

I have to agree Tony. In my almost 50 year long driving riding career I have driven fire engines, trucks, busses, cars, Motorhomes, bikes of all sizes and towed caravans all over Europe. It was always a relief to get across the channel 🙄

BUT - you only have to drive down a British motorway to encounter a long queue of newer cars seemingly glued to the centre lane ( or the third if there are four) and relying on their cars’ systems to keep them in their place in the queue. God forbid anyone in a “slower” lane trying to enter their domain to attempt an overtake 😳

Adaptive cruise and lane keeping on, finger up **** and brain in neutral 😡

I love that - I save so much time because I tend to drive in the 'slow' lane, where often I have the lane practically to myself while the other 2-3 lanes get super congested or even stop

I don't think autonomous cars will help though - As I always say, they need to retrain or just get the bad drivers off the road, but they don't know how to do it so make it someone else's problem (i.e. the manufacturers)

Everything they're doing is just lowering the standard of driving - Even I feel I've become a worse driver since I've had the hybrid.

I wonder if my 4 front sensors are an extra because to switch the audio beep off there is a switch in an odd place below the headlight level control, are these sensors involved in stopping or does the radar, or camera do it

They were added by the dealership, not factory made.

Yeah, those are after-market dealer-fit sensors and aren't tied into the vehicle ECU like the factory ones

Tell me about it.  I had a very long drive on the motorway yesterday and you get plagued by certain cars that stalk you for miles.  They speed up then slow down and hog the middle lane so they either stop you getting back from lane three or stop you getting out of lane one.  The worst irritation is when they pass and drop in within inches of your front bumper.  Did 200 miles yesterday and never saw one police car.

I was taught to not pull in before I was able to see the number plate of the car I'd just overtaken in my rear view mirror.

Sadly there are some who pull in when they see the plate in their side mirror

My brand new Corolla did an emergency stop for no reason recently and I am too nervous to drive it. Horrified to see that it happened to someone else at 60mph. I took it back to the dealer who says its all working normally and they turned the sensitivity down. However now it seems to be breaking even in normal traffic - not emergency stop level, but definitely assisting with breaking. I wish I had never bought it and I am interested if anyone has succeeded in getting it fixed or their money back by Toyota.

I'm about to take my 22 Yaris in tomorrow as did it today. Emergency stop for no obvious reason. Nothing in front of the car or anywhere to cause it. Fortunately nothing at the back of me. Know they'll fob me off. I've just had a hip replacement and two recent spinal ops. I'm worried if it does it again that I'll be hit, be injured and need more surgery.  Worse case scenario, could cause a pile up on a motorway!!  I don't trust the car any more!!
