Daytime Running Lights failed in one headlight

Can you replace the just the LED DRLs or does it need a complete headlight ? 2014 pre facelift

There is no easy way of changing the DRL LEDs.  Certainly, from a dealer point of view, a new headlamp would be fitted, which would be in the order of £400 for the part. (The bumper has to be removed to allow access for the headlamp to come out, by the way.)

Was the car's last service done at a Toyota dealer?  If it was, then the car may be covered by the 10 year Toyota 'Relax' warranty, but there is a mileage cap on this, I think.

How many miles has the car done?

The headlamp's Shell is in two halves, clipped and glued together with a mastic sealant.  If the halves are split open, then the faulty electronics are then accessible to attempt a 'specialist' repair.  This has been done on Avensis headlamps, using a domestic oven to soften the sealant and allow it to be prised apart.

But this all requires good DIY skills and a handy and willing electronics bod - plus there is some risk this can all go wrong!  New electronic parts have to be identified and sourced too.

I think in so far as this forum is concerned, you would be the first Auris owner to go down that repair route...

Officially no you can't as there are no 'bulbs' in the LED headlamps to change - It's considered a sealed unit.

Unofficially you can crack it open and replace the LED strings (Assuming you can find the right replacements) but it can be a bit of a PITA and it's often hard to get it sealed properly again (So you end up with the condensation and fishbowl problem over time as there's no drainage)

I was going to say try and get it replaced under warranty, as that'd avoid all of that palava, but the relax T&C's specifically exclude lamps and bulbs

It's an ex taxi 243,000 miles on the clock, so I guess it's out of waranty

Oops, that’s a bit on the higher side 👍 if it’s me I will just leave it like that and use the lights instead. There are few things that you need to do or double check to make sure your car will work as it should for many more miles: 

1. Egr system clean including throttle body, intake manifold, maf sensor.

2. Hybrid Battery cooling fan filter 

3. Timing chain tensioner and gasket replacement 

4. Vvti solenoid clean and test (check) 

5. Transmission fluid drain and refill only 3ltr original Toyota WS automatic transmission fluid 

6. Both Coolant for the engine and Inverter, drain and refill only , best to use Toyota ready mix pink coolant 

7. Spark plugs original whenever is time to change usually every 60k miles

8. AC regas and new pollen filter 

9. All 4 wheel alignment 

for 8 and 9 you can use https://www.protyre.co.uk

Only buy original Toyota parts from a dealer, or eBay Toyota official store or official dealers, any other places oem parts are likely to be fake .

Offside one is working, nearside one was flickering now gone off completely

I would have thought both on the same fuse ?

Thanks for the heads up

The guy I bought it off has been getting it serviced every 6000 miles . I checked the oil on the dipstick and it looks fresh. Inverter coolant still a bright pink colour

Drives really nice ( better than my Mercedes E300 bluetech hybrid that dropped oil everywhere and repair costs were spiralling out of control )

Sounds very much like the LED DRL cluster has eventually failed (highly likely given the mileage). Treat the DRL LEDs as sealed units. They can’t be accessed, repaired or replaced. Best bet is get a used headlight cluster from a breakers or eBay.
