Overdrive Mk4 Auto

Been out tonight playing about with the overdrive.

From what i understand the overdrive off function means that the 4th gear isnt used thus you push the 3rd up to the red (approx 130mph) is this right?

With overdrive off i was expecting the car to hit the redline in 1st and 2nd but it still changes up at the same time as with overdrive on. So i assume you only really notice overdrive off when the third gear gets to the change up point for 4th and just keeps on going instead.

Guess i'll wait for santapod and see if having the overdrive off improves my 1/4 times

its a myth.. overdrive doesnt affect the gears below it. It doesnt hold them any longer (as you've just discovered). Press it /release it all you want, it wont affect your quarter.

whats it for?

Its an electronically controlled gear.. the overdrive' refers to the gearbox ouput shaft spinning faster than the input from the engine. So, its basically just the gear after 3'rd.

It wont affect your rev changes.. the only thing that will do that is the 'manu' or 'power' button... but that becomes obsolete on a foot back throttle anyway. Power and manu only hold the revs longer during a partial throttle.. a full foot back will still redline the revs regardless of the power or manu button being pressed.

What Adi said...

With OD off, you can hold it in 1, 2, 3, under acceleration when using the shifter... thats how I used to drag my soarer TT, just remember there is a small delay between shifting the shifter andd the gear changing.

  • 3 weeks later...

overdrive is only noticeable/useful when driving normally ie: around 35-50 driving steadily it stops the box flicking from 3rd to 4th and back to 3rd every time you press/release the throttle slightly, so it keeps it in 3rd saving the clutch.

The reason it feels that it revs higher is that, with it on, you'll be driving in 4th, then it will downshift to 3rd or even 2nd when you accelerate harder, giving the impression it revs higher when on.

Go for a spin in manu mode, the highest gear you have is 3rd (still good for 140+) take off manu and it will then change into 4th

hope that helps :afro:
