Anyone tell me if the 7AFE engine used in the celica ST1.8 is the same as the 7AFE used in the Corolla and Avensis i.e. are they interchangeable?

Not the same engine as used in the newer VVTi Corolla and Avensis - and not even the facelifted previous Corolla or Avensis. But AFAIK they're the same as the pre-facelift previous models.

And Toyota being Toyota, I can't imaging them using the same engine but with different mounts etc.

Maybe someone here as experience of taking the 3S-GE engine from an MR2 and putting that into a Celica will be able to tell you whether Toyota have differences between engines on different models...

I'd have thought that any 7AFE would be basically as any other. The mounts between models will almost certainly be different but as long as you bolt your old mounts onto the replacement engine it should fit. You may find that some items on the engine will be slightly different but you have the option of putting the basic block and head in and putting all the bits of your engine onto it. In some cases like swapping engines between revisions (like rev3 MR2 engine into a rev1 car )you also need to get the ECU and engine loom for the newer engine.
