Hey peeps!

I couldn't see a proper tyre topic so i had to create a topic about it.

The rear tyres on my TS are on the way out(hardened and looking old), getting close to the wear mark(3.5mm thread left according to the depth gauge) and they're the original Falkens(2019) 225/45/17 from factory and they're quite noisy as i was a passenger in the back and that's the main noise coming in the cabin right there the wheel arch is. The front tyres are not noisy(they're some cheap dynamo no-name tyres but they're new).

I want comfort and safety from my tyres, i was looking at Goodyear Efficient grip performance 2 and primacy 4's . Are there any other models to look at? I wouldn't go for all season since the front tyres are summer ones.

thank you

Hi,

these two you stop at are indeed one of the best. I am driving my car with Goodyear egp 2 since 2020, covered over 60k miles and I can say, these are great , possibly the best summer touring tyres. The idea of buying an all season tyres like Goodyear vector four seasons gen 3 or Michelin cross climate 2 is probably your best bet, however you have to buy all 4. You can do that and sell the front summer ones on eBay , Facebook etc. Also even you go for only two tyres , better not to mix and match different makes and models, therefore if you want only two tyres perhaps buy same as the fronts. There are plenty of posts about tyres in Corolla and Auris forums. 👍

All season tyres like the two above mentioned are usually quieter and more comfortable particularly on rough asphalt, which is commonly used in the uk road network .

Thanks! Was thinking to get the cross climates 2 but I will have to change them all round!

Tbh, this is the best for your comfort and safety. Also saves money on a long run, just you will need to rotate front with rears every 10k miles for example.  I do that and always buy all 4 tyres. Friend of mine is a wheel alignment specialist and he said about the different tyres: “ do you walk with different shoes? “ , so why would you drive the car with different tyres “ 😉😂👌

Good point. I might change them all round to cross climate 2, I'm just worried about the noise if they will be noisy, it's just my bugbear, I want them to be less noisy in the back than my current rubbers.

Not sure about the shoes since personally I have normal shoes, walking boots, cycling shoes, leather shoes etc 😂 for different occasions.

I changed my tyre on my Corolla hatchback which had the same size tyres 225/45/17 and I had the same problem with noise at the and I changed the tyres with primacy 4 and it cured the noise and the grip was also improved in all weather's and conditions.

Thanks peeps!

I'll be looking for CC2's if the budget allows, or decide between the Efficientgrips and primacys if I can't stretch to the CC2's.

Been watching reviews and collecting information about Michelin cross climate 2 and noticed a few people complain about tyres were cracking on the side walls after two years , similar to my experience with both Goodyear and Nexen. It seems like all tyre brands are affected, now I have to find out what exactly cause that event., the huge amount of salt thrown during winter or the rubber compound that manufacturers are using in the recent years?, or perhaps a combination of both ?!

It's usually caused by heat, sun exposure and road chemicals; May be they're using the wrong rubber compounds like the Continental Premium Contact 5's I tried on my Mk1 ages ago, which lasted 7000 miles before wearing out... Methinks they forgot to vulcanize it properly or something   Or they made them out of recycled Mk1 ARB droplink bushes

The CC2s were introduced in North America in 2020 and in Europe in 2021, so it will be interesting if we get similar reports over here (assuming the reports you referred to are from North America).

I fitted CC2s in January this year and so far I have been impressed with their performance, particularly in the rain and on the dry roads and hot weather that we are experiencing at the moment. The final test will come with (hopefully) some snow etc. in winter.

Toyota suggests tyre rotation every 6000 miles, so I do that as it is in sync with my previous summer/winter tyre changing routine 👌

I prefer to stick with original make fitted on purchase as road handling is specified against cars recommended tyres.

I think I read that from eu reviews comments, it might not be for the cc2 but the previous cc+, have to double check, but either way it is strange this to happen on 2-3 years old tyres. I never experienced anything like that before with any brands. I do a bit more mileage but tyres wearing very well and last long but unfortunately they start to crack on the inner walls and show signs of dry rot. I blamed quietly the brand nexen, but now my Goodyear started to crack I think it’s not about the brand but the environment and the materials they are made. Also why they don’t age on the outside wall but only on the inside? The difference I only can think of is that I wash the car often and the outer side is clean where the inner stays well covered in salt and that kills the rubber quickly.

I changed my Falkens to Primacy 4s all round and even though there’s still tyre noise it’s not a problem like it was, a big improvement. Plus they have more grip in the wet than the Falkens in the dry!

Hi Ian @shufman,

just wanted to check in, would you still recommend Primacy 4s? I'm debating whether it's worth the money, for me the main concern is noise reduction. Compared to Falkens, would you say you noticed the difference immediately or was it more like "yeah, I suppose that's better... maybe..."? 😄

Wondering that myself as well!

I'll plan to ditch the original Falkens (17") next summer season for Michelin Primacy 4s (18"), but after doing a little bit of light research I cannot yet find the model with wheel protection lips and extra load capacity. I've read as well that they tend to wear off quite fast, but help a lot with the tyre noise thingie and overall grip/handling...

But if the ride surfaces in your country are a little bit rough, I think nothing helps, it's just a slight 'perception' of improvement.

I've seen @shufman 's post about his Michelins and I concur: Just on looks, they're worth the money!

I'd personally not switch from 17" to 18" on a Corolla. I'm actually thinking of going from 17" to 16" in the future. Granted, I've driven 18" on Falkens  only (so worst possible noise 🙂), but still.

This is possibly the best choice every Corolla owner can do, just buy 16” wheels Toyota btw offer really good ones spec for Corolla 2019-> , pick a quality tyres , if you live in uk all season v shaped are the most comfortable and quietest option for rough asphalt. I have done that on my Auris  215/45 17 -> 205/55 16 and the car is much better to drive.  This low profile tyres does nothing but kill efficiency and comfort, but they look good in the eyes of many. Wheel kerb damage it’s unavoidable on 18” wheels, it’s not about if but when will happen.

I have 16" original Toyota wheels with winter studless Continental Vikingcontact 7, 205/55R16. Driven with them from last November to early March, around 6000km (3720 miles). I still found it noisy, but better than Falkes on 17" and Davantis on 17".

But I can't wait for the winter to arrive now, because I get to put those wheels/tyres back 🙂 The only downside is that those 16" wheels look pretty sad. I couldn't find nice Toyota wheels in this size.

Hi all,

Yeah a few months on and it’s one of the best things I’ve done, there’s still plenty of noise don’t get me wrong but it’s not disproportionate to the other noise like the old Falkens were. They ruined the car for me on some journeys as to my ears the noise was deafening.

its measurably quieter especially on rough tarmac, measuring 2/3 db less at higher speed - roughly speaking there’s the same noise at 70 mph now as the old tyres doing about 40/50.

They look good and are wearing well - there’s more grip in the wet as the Falkens had in the dry in my opinion - I wouldn’t have a new Corolla now without swapping before delivery.

I've always rated Michelin but I bet you’d get similar results with any other good make.

Here the one that I have in my watching list, sadly Toyota has increased the piece a lot, they use to be £140 per peace. I remember those in black also were offered in some trim levels like icon tech and design back in 2019 when Corolla was on sale for the first time. I don’t know why they don’t give choice when ordering a new car to pick your wheels but they decide the size. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/223892658947?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=nh5IESpNTTu&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=p34UK1z2T4m&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

Yup, I think these are the ones I have for winter. Here's a photo of my previous Hatchback with those wheels and winter tyres.

Sounds fantastic, thank you. Really glad for you!

Just to clarify, we're talking about 17" wheels, correct? And your car is a 2.0L estate?

No I’m on the 18” and it’s a 2.0 hatch.

I think on 17s you’d get the same results.

ian 😊
