I am considering changing my car for a C,hr .I only use my car mainly for short local runs of between 5 to 25 miles at a time. My present car a Toyota Prius is giving me an average of 70 mpg. What mpg should I expect from a 1.8 C,hr. I feel the higher C,hr would be easier to get in and out of.

It all depends on how you drive. I have the 2.0 C-HR and usually get around 60 mpg. For the last three times I've filled up my average mpg have been 62.69 mpg, 62.89 mpg, and the last one was 61.55 mpg. These figures have been calculated from the mileage done, and the number of litres put in the tank. They are pretty close to the mpg shown on the gauges.

This is a mixture of motorway and town driving, with trip lengths similar to yours.

If you're in a 1.8, you may get better mileage.

These days the WLTP figures are a pretty good indication of what is achievable. Toyota quote:

  • 53.2 - 57.6 mpg for the 1.8 hybrid and
  • 49.5 - 53.2 mpg for the 2.0 hybrid

I have a 1.8 Excel with 18" wheels. Regularly achive 60mpg+ driving a mixture of rural (hilly) areas and a commute with around 15miles of dual carriageway containing about 6 roundabouts and a million set of traffic lights 🤬.

So much depends on driving style and as a hybrid driver you will know how economy is best achieved. I've not driven a 2.0  but given the choice, I'd go for one over the 1.8, just to get that little bit more oomph, especially when I drive up some of our steeper hills.

You will get all sorts of figures banded about but it all depends how you drive the car, which engine and the roads you drive on. We live and drive in quite mountainous regions and we can easily get circa 65 mpg (4.3ltrs/100km).

I stuck to the 1.8 because here there is no road tax to pay but for the 2.0 there is.

The CHR likely won't get as good mpg as your Prius, but the Yaris and Yaris Cross likely would beat it, and the Cross is built higher so would be easier to get into/out of (Unlike the normal Mk4 Yaris, which is the most difficult to get in/out of Yaris of the 4 generations of Yaris! )
