Yaris Manual Gearbox Selector Modification

Hi,

I'm new to this group so apologies if this topic has appeared here before but I can't see the answer I'm looking for:

My wife has a 2008 Yaris 1.3 with 45000 miles on the clock and a manual gearbox, it is experiencing difficult notchy gear changes and sometimes crunchy reverse selection. I've checked the clutch operation; there's no slipping and it appears to be good.

I intend to bleed the clutch hydraulics and change the gearbox oil as a solution but I've also seen a post on here from a member back in 2012 who mentions a similar issue and the solution as a "selector mod'?

However, I can't find any details as to what this selector modification actual is. Can anyone help please?

Thanks in anticipation of your help.

Regards

Dave

From what I've seen the most common causes that sort of thing in the Mk2 are gearbox oil needs replacing and the gear selector cables need recalibrating/adjusting.

Shifter mod ? replacing the shifter bushings to tighten up a loose shift, the cables may also need adjusting

Clutch has a hydraulic system but I take the point about possible slack linkages and the need to either adjust or replace the linkage mechanism.

Gearbox oil is it low if its last change is unknown change it.

Check for play in the cables look at the large rubber washer connecting cables to gearbox.

Clutch is hydraulic but the gear selector still uses a pair of push-pull cables and it seems the Mk2 is more prone to those getting out of alignment than other Yarisususesies (More on the 6-speed than the 5-speed tho')

Thanks for the tip about the clutch cables. Are there some adjustment instructions you are aware of somewhere?

If 1st and 2 are hard to engage, the shifter cables need adjustment,  there are 2 different setups I can remember what has, what

one has the cable the adjustment is done at the shifter end, the other type is at the gearbox end

flush and bleed the clutch, replace the gearbox fluid, low miles on a 08 many mean the pressure plate is worn or the throw out bearing is on its way out

It sounds like shifter cables/bushes to me.

No harm in bleeding the clutch though, if it is the same as the T25 Avensis then I found I had to bleed the slave cylinder by actuating the clutch lever as well as the clutch pedal.

What oil did you use?

Thanks for all the suggestions and help. Yes, ultimately it could be that the clutch plate is worn and I’ll have to replace it.

The idea of there being a shifter mod seems to be red herring?

No, the bushes wear over time, and you end up with a flaccid shifter and horizontal movement
