PHEV Charge Mode

Is it worth using the PHEV charge mode? Im assuming this reduces efficiency in terms of MPG?

Not really in my opinion. It will reduce mpg. Burning petrol to create electricity introduces an inefficient step. Just consider the energy lost to heat.

I see the only beneficial use for this is if you wanted to generate additional EV range on the highways before entering a city, for example a clean air zone to avoid charges.

Nigel has hit the nail on the head, I think the intended purpose is if you need to run on EV within certain city limits.

Are there actually places where this applies? How can they tell if you run the car in EV or HEV mode once within the limits?

Only place it might be relevant in UK afaik is in that there London village. Not that I've ever driven there so I don't know. It does apply to some cities on the continent though, e.g. in Italy - Florence, Milan, etc. I can't be sure how they know but many use PHEVs in this way from what I saw last time I was there. Perhaps you get pulled if there are visible emissions from the tailpipe? It's all irrelevant to me so haven't paid much attention. I wouldn't dream of driving a £40k SUV in an Italian city! Maybe a £500 Fiat Cinquecento at a push.

Another potential use is when you can't plug-in and are making short trips, run it in charge mode on the first trip and do the second or third on electric. Saves having to warm up and run the engine on every trip.

There is perhaps one other situation. That's is where you need a charged traction Battery at your destination because you are going to sleep in the car with the air con running one way or another from the traction Battery power, or, you are lucky enough to have got the 1.5kW power outlet in the boot and need to use your power tools at the destination.

Good call, I have used the 150W outlet in the UK R4P but wish it could have been slightly more powerful. Maybe another item on the updated R4P wish list.

Hi all.....or in my case utilise the outlet to power a static exercise bike stored behind the car, rather than permanently on view in the apartment. There are a total lack of 240v sockets at car park level. Big plus for the RAV auxiliary supply point.
