Hi All,

After venturing back to London for the day the price we paid for a couple of coffees was just under £7. The average price for a gallon of petrol is over £8. If the increase in energy and living costs continues to rise at this rate, the cost of car ownership will force many to give up their cars.

These costs are driving up servicing and car parts which are essential. How is this ever going to be resolved? How many car owners are now looking at the viability of their car ownership?

Interested to know thoughts on this.

£3.50 for a coffee, bargain, especially in London.

I'm self employed, and so use my car, a 1996 Volvo 940 estate for work. A lot of my work is thankfully less than 10 miles away which is good as it's not the most fuel efficient at 20-32mpg. A petrol 2316cc low pressure turbo and an automatic. What it drinks in fuel more than makes up in it's reliability and ease of self maintenance. £250 5 years ago. Now run in at 207,000.

For best I have an Auris Hybrid TS. Use for best and cheap to run and tax, as free road tax. Insurance is double the Volvo, but worth far more, both insured for business use.

I live rural and am 42, no kids, live by myself on a narrowboat at a Marina, and so essential to have at least one car.

James.

I use my free bus and oyster card in London with hop on hop off.  No need to get the 'right' bus.  Number 14 used to take me from KX direct to my door, then they changed the route.  Now just get any going on the right direction and hop off as it deviates.

In the country it doubles the journey times, does not end up where I want, and I am limited to their timetable and what I can carry. The only viable alternative is a taxi at £30 round trip.
