Swappable Battery Packs

Standardisation is indeed a Betamax issue, that is how all petrol pump nozzles only fit petrol tank fillers. Or diesel.

Why all EV charging points use a common system for charge payment.  Apart from....

All 12v car batteries have identical terminals.  Except those that don't.

bulbs, fuses, petrol, 12v, negative earth, at least some stuff is standard.

Toyota are working with Isuzu and Hino in a joint research programme looking at the feasibility of swappable packs for specific commercial vehicles only at this point. It may well be possible to implement a standardised approach for a narrow range of vehicles. It would also potentially be a competetitive advantage for them in the future of commercial EV's because they have high overheads and optimising their downtime is a critical issue . Doubt they are envisaging a standard for the entire marketplace.

The sad thing is that it’s not always the best that becomes the standard. In the example of the VHS, Betamax, Phillips 1” Video systems the Phillips was by far the best system, slow motion, freeze frame, image and sound quality were excellent in comparison to the winner VHS. But VHS had the backing of the film industry and the availability of the consumer movie videos one out in the end.

it’s not until one item gets to the top of the pile that the costs come down, reliability goes up and the industry in general can expand and produce competitive versions. Exactly what happened with VHS, more manufacturers, much improved performance, reliability and significantly lower cost once the product technology variants competition had been eliminated.

It seems that almost every car released to date as a hybrid, PHEV or EV has a different Battery size, connections, capacity, voltage with the added complications of the charge types and connections.

Trucks make sense as existing fuel packs are on exposed mountings so substituting one type of fuel pack for another would be logical.

Security would not seem an issue as I don't think fuel tanks get stolen

Ernie, quite.  We had a Philips, double sided tape.  Separate start/stop times, degree in modern hieroglyphics not required.

At least Philips won the audio tape battle with cassette beating 8-track.
