Someone stuck anything up the exhaust, saying that it would have no power and wouldnt rev,

Just my meandering thoughts - it sounds like low back pressure and turbulent air, that would point to the PCV or EGR systems, any signs of a blowing or loud exhaust

I will have a look at the PCV today.

Does this car have an EGR? To my knowledge they're only fitted to diesels... but then again, I don't know much... 😃

yes, yes they do - a pipe from the bottom of the cat goes up to the head, a passage goes through the head to the rear right where the EGR valve is, using the head as a EGR cooler

the valve looks like this

Thanks! I did not know they have one! I will try to give that a once over with some break risk cleaner.
