What would be achievable in one of these 1.8 avensis estates sitting on cruise control for 250 miles doing 60-70mph

also what’s the more reliable 1.8 the 1zz (post 06) or the 2zr?

me and my colleague are looking for the cheapest most reliable way to do a 500 mile round journey every month

Can't say what is achievable economy, but the range gets longer at constant speeds below 70 mph.

For reliability between between the '06 1.8 1ZZ-FE and the 2ZR-FAE this is a fascinating debate. I think both are reliable. The 2ZR being later gives the advantage, plus mated to the 6 speed gearbox, there is less wear and tear. Add the fact that cruise control is only available on the 2ZR except base models, is another advantage. When I was looking to replace my '98 Avensis 1.8 GLS seven years ago, I was looking at late T25s. At that time, good condition cars were commanding good prices, average ones average prices. Then I noticed the T27 models were getting affordable, so I found my current car. I bought from a local secondhand dealer and have enjoyed it ever since.
If you want a cheap Avensis 1.8 petrol that is reasonable, check places like auctions.

Based on my experience of owning and driving a 1.8 Vvti estate (2004) I would guess you might average 45mpg. Sitting at 60 I think you could get higher and close to 50mpg. Gradients, number of passengers, amount of luggage and how well serviced the car is will obviously play their part in reducing your average mpg.
