And in the 50s someone did it for you, checked oil and water and washed your windscreen.

A few years ago on Funchal I got out and went to refuel the car when a lad ran out.  I was not to do it.  He would do it.

Good grief, how long ago was that!?

The only things I remember anyone getting as a gift were green shield stamps, and also .... whatever drug-fuelled fever-dream this was...

Got a set of six whisky tumblers with Shell in the 70s one each of the well known whisky  brands ,in exchange for errr... a few fill ups on the Anglia.

These were quickly requisitioned by my dad ,as well as the contents of my change jar and anything else not nailed down.

I think items like these conferred a certain sophistication upon a 70s household, along with the 6 Babycham glasses, and a blue band dish.

However I remain grateful for my early conditioning to modest tastes, and to this very day embrace my lifelong love of turnips and carrots.

I think it was Shell in the 1970s but I don't know if it was every station that gave them away

World cup coins, smurfs, blank cassette tapes,Glass tumblers these were some of the gifts given when filling up with petrol in the 70s 80s.😀

How about the tigers tail from Esso in the 60s?

These could be attached to the seat pillar on a home assembled bicycle from the scrapyard, with the attached cloth tape.

These were given away at our local Esso with petrol for cars, and for us youngsters a two gallon fill up of the paraffin tin for the oil heaters in the house.

I still have fond memories of that !Removed! tin slapping on my legs on the 5 mile walk home.

Only kidding Bernard ,it was only a 2 mile walk.🙂

Or at least seemed like it when you are 8 years old.

Nearby was a fishing tackle !Removed! junk shop that sold a scoop of maggots for a tanner.

We all used to fish the inland harbour here back then, and mix with the kids from the live aboard boats.

Then they improved it and put an ugly concrete wall around to make it as awkward as possible for anglers and boat people.
