I saw some pictures similar to this once before. The reason it looks a bit like the way it does, is because it's a joint project between Toyota and the PSA group (Peugoet and Citroen) - I have no idea why they decided to team up with them, but then since the Yaris started to get made in France it was invetible things could go down-hill a bit.

If you look at the stance of it, you'll notice it has similarities with the Citroen C2, and the new Peugoet 1007, apart from the trademark Yaris curved lines under the windows there quite similar.

I dunno where that pic came from, its OLD!! ... in fact its from 1997!!! Toyota made a concept car named the "Fun Time" in 1997 ... which was soon turned into the Vitz/Yaris/Echo u see today. So to the above, it DEFINITELY is NOT the new Echo/Yaris! Along side the 'funtime' the 'Funcargo' was also seen in its first form --- little did people know that these two cars would be heading toyotas small car market for quite a few years...

Frankfurt '97 always will be remembered as the show at which Toyota finally shook off its conservative Japanese heritage and embraced European design innovation. The Funtime trio are hugely momentous cars because they preview the small car Toyota plans to build in Europe at the rate of 200,000 a year in late 1999.

Funtime effectively is the replacement for the slow-selling, mediocre Starlet and is being developed over a totally new platform with a range of similarly new and innovative gasoline and diesel engines, including a 1.5L turbodiesel I-4 with common-rail fuel injection that promises 81 mpg in normal driving.

Well there u go... mystery solved.

On another note ... What do u guys make of this? :hokus-pokus:

I got some people in a Japanese irc channel to translate it for me but it is chinese :S :

There will be 1.0 , 1.3 and 1.5 versions.

Apparently there will be a 4x4 version in 1.0L vers only :S

And the vitx will be capable of 4 litres lasting 100kmh. So 60 mpg :S

And the interior will get a lift aswell :)

The passenger compartment seems to have grown by 23 cm as well

It gets more intriguing...

Secret Yaris Hits The Road

Auto Express reader Peter White could hardly believe his eyes when he was overtaken on a French highway by a group of heavily disguised cars. So, as his wife drove, he began to take a series of photographs - and this is the result. Unknowingly, Peter caught the first pictures of Toyota's new Yaris on the road.

The next-generation model is due to go on sale in 2005, and is bigger than the car it replaces. Both three and five-door editions will be available, codenamed 980N and 970M respectively. Peter said: "The disguised cars were all five-doors, and there were also some current Yaris models, which were clearly testing engines. One of them even had a series of turbo boost gauges mounted on the A-pillar, next to the driver. But no one in the convoy looked too happy when I started to take pictures."

The five-door Yaris is expected to be fairly conventional. We revealed how the car will borrow styling cues from the Avensis In Issue 784. However, designers are believed to have been let loose on the look of the sportier three-door version, which will feature a sliding pass- enger door to improve access to the rear cabin. Inside the new Yaris, buyers can expect fold-flat seats and a flexible load area. Secure underfloor storage is also set to be developed.

Entry-level cars are likely to use a 1.0-litre engine, but two new ultra-efficient D-CAT diesels are also being developed. While exact specifications have yet to be confirmed, it's thought this unit will be based on the 1.4-litre D-4D powerplant available in the current line-up.

Two flagship models are also planned, including a 1.5-litre turbo. There's even talk of a hybrid version, offering at least 80mpg. But it's not all good news - following poor UK sales, the Yaris Verso may not be part of the new line-up.
