Wheel stud length

Hi Guys,

yes, I'm still alive, still have my IQ.  Almost a complete respray later (Compliments of Toyota after the pearlescent white started to fall off. Thank you Toyota for sorting that. 🙂 )

I now need to find out how long a wheel stud is.  The idiots that fitted my new tyres did up the wheel nuts with an air impact tool. I had to stand on a 1.5-meter breaker bar to loosen them.

All looks OK and I re torqued them to spec. I need to know if the studs have been stretched, if so, they must be replaced along with the very expensive locking wheel nut set. Appx £300 with labour.

I have little chance of recovering this as the idiot tyre fitting place deny any of this, including bending my front offside wing at the bottom where the two-post lift arm was put carelessly in the wrong place.

Now at 70+ years old, I could well do without taking this to court.  If the studs are OK, then all is well, if not??? it's going to be very expensive.

Hey, Craggle, you seem to think I'm a Chicken when it comes to air bags, well I still have a nice scar on my hand when the passenger airbag decided to go off when I was removing it from my old Smart car.

Yes, I did follow the safety rules and I was wearing safety glasses.  Not fun!  It gave me a healthy respect for air bags.

If the nuts are over torqued they will stretch the threads, it's only a matter of time before they succumb to stress/fatigue, the studs maybe OK

£300 for locking wheel nuts inc fitting is a joke

the threads are M12 x 1.5 - even the Mc Gard locking nuts are under £30

did you manage to get the locking nuts free

Hi flash22,

a quick look around the net found me a price of £56 for a new set of Mc Guard tapered wheel nuts, but I'm sure a more thorough look would find a better price.

£300 is to fit a complete set of wheel studs at around £95, plus labour at a Toyota dealer, plus the price I found for the Mc Guards adds up to about £300

Why do you think the studs are not stretched, stretched and broken wheel studs were fairly common when I was working for a main dealer

Who would get free Mc Guard locking wheel nuts, I bought these when my new wheels were purchased in 2014 I have no idea what they cost then?  I know they were not free.

Thanks for the reply flash22.

There are 2 types of nuts

Examples

Used with the factory alloys

90942-01033 - https://lexuspartsdirect.co.uk/product/lexus-wheel-nut/

Steel wheels

90942-01007 - https://toyotaparts.mcgeorgetoyota.com/oem-parts/toyota-wheel-nut-type-a-9094201007

Mc Gard - 24195SU, 21156SU or 24012SU

£30-35 from the likes of halfrauds, Opie Oils, Amazon or eBay

Studs

90942-02049

An independent should be half the cost labour wise

stud length 47-49mm

Thanks for the info flash 22, very useful. I can now measure the studs and see if they are out of spec.

I was going to buy one and measure it.  Annoyingly I could not find the details of the studs anywhere, not even my dealer knew.

Thanks again flash22, you have been most helpful.  Finding a good independent here in the Harrow area has been quite a trial.  As a factory trained now retired mechanic, my standards are high.  I've yet to find one that I can trust.

  • 4 weeks later...

I’m pleased to say all is now good with my possibly damaged wheel studs and nuts.

All the studs were in spec and the threads matched the thread gauge perfectly, the wheel nuts showing signs of stress damage and were replaced with much better-quality British made with real chrome plating rather than bright zinc. The McGuard locks were still perfectly OK, the garage said these locking wheel nuts are almost indestructible!

Yes the Mc Gard's very hard, so much, so you kill the key if over torqued

iirc the studs are grade 10.5 and the nuts are grade 8 or 8.8 - as i previously said the threads will get pulled (softer material)

i have had wheel bolts over torqued in the past, i had to get a 6 pointed socket to get the locking nuts off (1 destroyed socket later) luckily they were not the type with the slip collar

Thanks for all the info Bob, the garage I took it to are specialists with wheels, tyres and fitting. They have some high-quality equipment to fit tyres and wheels the right way.

They actually already knew the specs for the studs and a useful gauge to check the thread pitch of both the studs and nuts.

When I need tyres again, I will absolutely go back to them.  Kipling Motorist Centre 3 - Team Protyre in Bushy. Very nice people to do business with.

Maybe I will get jumped on by the mods for recommending them. So be it.

As you may have gathered, my main dealer wanted just to change everything in case future problems arose. I can see that, but way too expensive. I think I’m safe enough to risk it.

The company that supplied the tyres have paid for this service, great!
