Broken shift cable Avensis automatic

I took my Avensis in as I was having trouble with the gear shifter of my T27. This apples to all petrol automatic T27 and earlier. £95 for the diagnostic machine to find no fault. I have no idea about diesel vehicles as I do know the governor can decide to put more power to the engine in certain cases. Beware, you could get seriously hurt.

Now for the story:

Have you ever experienced a broken shift change (gear change) cable. I jammed up the French-Switzerland border crossing due to a breakage.

Relax. Simple solution. Switch engine off, open bonnet after turning on hazard lights. Direct traffic using emergency lane and allow engine to cool a while. Mine jammed in Park mode so no-one could push or pull the vehicle. The Avensis is mine with less than 65,000 on the clock.

Down the front of the engine, facing outwards, is your gear selector cables and gear linkage. Push down on the lever sticking out the side of the gearbox until it stops clicking down. Lift once for reverse, lift twice for neutral, lift three times for drive. Make sure your handbrake is firmly on before doing this or you will be run over. Close the bonnet and release the handbrake. You are on your way. Switch off the engine when you stop and manually put the car into Park. Repeat the process when ready to pull off, select drive.

Get the cable replaced as soon as possible. About a two hour job in your local Toyota garage. Do not let them cheat on time. The diagnostic machine cannot read shifter cables so gives a no fault verdict. There is no simple fix for the 'Sports mode' and no reason to race with a damaged drive link. Safety first.

I will not run Toyota down but would suggest one could buy a brand new cable for under £100, a second hand one for about £30-£60.
