Hi, sorry if this is in the wrong place but I have a 1999 Vitz with an ABS issue (flickering light) replaced everything I can think of but still not working. Have tried code readers including the Toyota one from the dealers with no luck. Does anyone know of a code reader that works on imports and on ABS codes? Thanks for any help

If you mean you tried a techstream clone with Mini VCI it will not work as the mini VCI is canbus only, your car will use K-line

You can do a paper clip test by linking 2 pins on the OBD2 connector and turn the ignition on and count the flashes of the ABS light

It will flash a 2-digit code, either repeat the code or go on to the next code

what parts have you thrown at the car so far ?

Hi, thankyou, being a bit dense how do you mean it flashes the code? And how do I find out what the code means?

We've replaced ABS sensors, whole front shocks etc as they were knackered and the light was flashing going over bumps, reluctor rings, ABS wiring.... got MOT next Wednesday...eek!

Just tried the paperclip thing, getting codes 31, 34 and 61  any ideas what these mean? Thanks so much for any help

31 - front right wheel speed sensor signal malfunction -Sensor, connector or reluctor ring on the drive shaft

34 - rear left wheel speed sensor signal malfunction - replace the complete hub as the reluctor is part of the bearing, sensors die due to water ingress

61 - comms error - possibly caused by the paper clip test

Have you changed the ring on the drive shafts or replaced the CV joint ?

Be aware your car is a Japanese built Vitz, wheel bearings, brakes and the ABS system are different to the 2001-2005 French built cars as such you need the correct parts, ABS sensor are particularly troublesome especially the cheap Chinese tat

what engine and gearbox do you have ????

We changed the reluctor rings on front, not whole drive shaft. The rear has had complete new hubs both sides. It's a 1.0 litre auto 1999. Thankyou so much for your help.

Do you have the part numbers or listings for these parts ?? - the aftermarket is a nightmare for getting the correct parts for these cars

Why touch the wiring

Give me a while and I will pull some oem numbers, the cheap end of the market is very hit and miss, it may be new, but it may not work

We thought it was probably the wiring as the light was flickering,  especially over bumps etc, so possibly a loose connection/broken wire?

Thankyou very much

Did you replace the right front wheel speed sensor ??

Oddly enough, the parts you got are correct

Yes we replaced it with this, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/185067385136?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=pfWVgpugSlK&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=rDHozpdgSUS&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY

We didn't replace the whole drive shaft on the right hand side, just a new reluctor ring and this wiring.

All fixed! Wouldn't believe it, there was a loose connection behind the dash display....that was causing the light to flicker,  no actual fault with the ABS! An expensive learning curve. Thankyou so much for all your help with this issue it's greatly appreciated.
