Poor Brakes

I have got an avensis 2.0 cdx vvt-i on a y plate, I have only had it for three weeks and have noticed that the brakes feel very spongy. If I use them normally then they seem to work reasonably well but if I have to brake hard then the brake pedal travels down to the floor and the car stops eventually. I have checked the brake fluid level and it is on the max mark.

Has anybody else come accross this problem ?

If so was it expensive to fix?

I would be grateful for any comments on this subject.

I must admit the brakes in my Avensis feel very poor compared to the Nissan Primera I had before it, but I had them checked and apparently they are fine, i've heard that the pads Toyota used on the Avensis are not very good which could be part of the reason, but I'm not very impressed with the brakes in general.

I am having the discs and pads changed today. If that does not cure it then apparently it is probably the master cylinder at fault. I will let you all know the outcome.

The discs and pads have been changed. there is a dramatic improvement in the brakes, but they still feel spongy and the pedal will still travel to the floor if pressed hard enough. My local Toyota dealer had a look and bled the brakes through. this did not make any difference. They are now saying that this is normal on this car. Has anybody else noticed the same ????

the pedal will creep but not right down to the floor as you say before stopping you,

if the car has abs it will seem a little spongy under foot which is normal ,try stopping quickly you should feel a tapping under your foot ,if the master cylinder was broken , try this - pumping the pedal fast for 15 presses or so whilst parked engine running if it gets really hard under foot the cylinder is fine.
