Question about Gen 7 key fobs

Hi all,

I've just purchased a 2000 gen 7 (2zz/6 speed manual). It came with 3 keys, two with fobs and one without. Weirdly, the unlock button on both fobs works fine, but the lock button doesn't. When I press unlock on either fob, the LED on the fob lights up and the doors unlock. When I press the lock button on either fob, the LED on the fob doesn't light up and the car doesn't lock.

Is this a common issue with these? I pulled one fob apart and changed the Battery but still the same. I was tempted to further pull the fob apart to check contacts etc on the lock button, but it doesn't look like it wants to come any further apart.

I've had a bit of a google but was swamped by info on on to change the Battery, so thought I'd try my luck here 🙂

Cheers,

I have exactly the same issue - interested to see if anyone has any pointers for this.

Have you tried cleaning the switch contacts with an Electronic contact cleaner spray. This has worked for me in the pst with other fobs

Hi team,

So I bit the bullet and took to one of the fobs with a stanley knife to get access to the actual push buttons. I was careful to cut around the top edge and as I opened it up, the button for "lock" just fell off the PCB!! So thats the problem haha. I assume the other one is the same as both fobs look identical. I did a bit more investigation into it and these are chinese fobs that you can buy from amazon/aliexpress and then program to the computer in the celica. I can buy the whole package locally at a locksmith (new key/fob/programmed for $120), or I can try and figure out what fob I need from aliexpress, buy the fob with a blank key, get it cut locally and program it myself - the fob/blank key itself will be about $30, not sure how much to have it cut - maybe $10? So could be worth it. I have also learnt that to program a new fob to the car, you need to have at least one working fob/key (to get the car into programming mode) - otherwise its a trip to the dealer and lots of money apparently.

Cheers,
