85 Gt Distributor

Hi guys I'm new here, though I am a 'yota junkie.

Just picked up an '85 Celica GT (22re) It currently has a vaccuum advace distributor in it (no lines hooked up.) I'm assuming that it the wrong dist for this engine. So the question is do I need to replace this? I'm assuming that the advance is done electronically by the computer. I'm also assuming since the only wires to the distributor is a 2 pin connector that there is no advance taking place mechanically in the newer style distributors. I'm also wondering if not having vaccuum lines hooked up will make my timing whacky.

Beyond that The newer 22re engines have a distributor with a square plug verses a round one (like you see on the older ones and carb 22r.) Are these mechanically interchangable if you change the plug?

Thanks,

Chris
