Aygo first impressions.docx

Aygo: first impressions

3-door 2008 Aygo automatic, second-hand, 44,425 miles from new

For:

  • Excellent handling
  • Impressive fuel economy (68 mpg on a recent 1,200-mile trip)
  • Comfortable seats and steering wheel

Against:

  • Unappealing (not to say ugly) body style
  • Badly-designed instrument panel: oversized speedometer but tiny (and inaccurate) fuel gauge and hard-to-read odometer displays
  • Single-blade windscreen wiper does not sweep fully to the right.
  • Rear parcel shelf does not stay up when the rear hatch is raised.
  • Intrusive reflections from the ribbed dashboard surface and the shiny cover for the gear stick

Conclusions:

This model of the Aygo is an ideal city car, while still being capable of long journeys. However, at 70 mph the engine is noisy and struggling (unsurprisingly). The best speed range for economy appears to be 55 to 60 mph. Not as irritating to other road users as you might think as, on my recent long-distance trip, many other motorists were driving at similar speeds (fuel costs are really having an impact).
