Hi all,

I'm currently experiencing an intermittent issue with the radio in my Corolla GR Sport 2.0 (MY22).

The problem is that the radio volume will randomly turn itself down (Trying to adjust the volume using either the dial or buttons on steering wheel has no effect).

Has anyone else experienced this? Any fixes?

It must be an "auto-volume" that is in the radio settings. Disable it.

Thanks to you, I've discovered the most pointless car setting in the history of car settings. Cheers mate! Problem solved.

Interesting.  I always set the 'speed related volume' to the maximum and never had a problem with this on any of the cars I have had.

Quick update:

It's still happening. The volume buttons on the steering wheel don't work sometimes but the dial does. Also, when skipping a song, the volume will turn itself down to 0.

Just to clarify;  it's not the car radio that is the problem,  you have a problem when an auxiliary source is connected e.g.  phone or USB.

Interesting. Reckon Android Auto could be the issue then?

Daughter recently bought 63 plate Yaris. Same issue with the radio volume randomly going down and also touch screen stopping working. Garage changed radio. Volume still going down randomly. Separate garage checked wiring, changed radio for one they said they knew worked...intermittent random volume going to 0 again. Not automatic volume control as it happens when car not moving too. Any solutions out there? Ruining the first car experience!

Does it have steering wheel controls? Might be faulty buttons from e.g. fluid spill, or possibly the steering wheel clockspring is damaged, sending spurious signals?

Yes it does. But happens irrespective of whether those controls are touched or not.

(What's a steering wheel clickspring?)

(Clockspring)

It's the cable inside the steering wheel that connects all the steering wheel controls and horn etc. to the rest of the car. It's a wound helical cable so you can turn the wheel without snapping it, but it can get damaged.

If the button is shorting out from fluid damage or corrosion it wouldn't need to be touched to activate; My dad's old Ford Granada had an issue where the horn would just jam on if it got hot inside the car due to a dodgy connection

If so, sounds like to fix it would be tricky?

It's not too bad to replace if done correctly, assuming that's what it is.

Could try wiggling the buttons when it happens to see if that affects it at all, but TBH you probably need to find a decent auto electrician to diagnose it properly.
