Black Wire- Radio Unit

Hello there, I got a new radio with Android Auto that I'm installing on my 2012 RAV4 and the question I had is Do I actually connect the black wire of the unit to the black wire of the harness ? (They are both marked as Ground)

I was emailing someone from customer service and he said he thinks that's what I should do. I'm very new to these kind of modifications so I don't want to blow up anything.

If the customer service guy only said he thought so i would be very weary, see if you can get a wireing diagram from somewhere or Google it

That guy has been saying "I think" for everything, even for the most simple tiny thing, I think he's playing it safe. Thanks for the reference, I'll check it out.

If anyone else knows, please let me know

If the radio unit is clearly marked as ground, it would be worth checking the car wiring with a multimeter. Just check the continuity from that wire to a bolt on the bodywork, e.g. the door fitting.

To be honest, I'd always pay about £10 for the wiring harness adapter which is a short lead that connects to the existing Toyota type connector you took out of the original radio to the ISO type connector on the back of the new radio. Then there are no individual wires to connect and no chance of getting it wrong.

Something like this (not suggesting this is the correct one for your vehicle)....

Thank you Nlee, actually I do have a wiring harness adapter (Picture attached)  sorry I thought I mentioned that's where I am connecting the wires, I still have to solder them or use butt connectors. So technically the wiring harness adapter has a black wire and the harness of the radio harness has a black wire, is it safe to connect them together?

That's not the same thing. From the picture, it looks like they might be the connectors to the Toyota connectors but they don't have the ISO connectors on the other end, which would normally plug into standard ISO sockets on the back of the replacement radio. That's assuming your new unit has ISO sockets (I thought fairly standard now), if it just has a bunch of wires that can't be removed, then you have no option but to match everything up.
