Check rear seat message?

After lifting the rear seat to connect my charger leads to the Battery my car now says “check rear seat” when you turn the car off. I have lifted the seat again but can’t see any problems, has anyone else had this problem?

You get this message if any rear door is opened before you drive away. I think it’s to make sure you don’t leave anything or anyone in the back when you get out. Does it happen if the doors are not opened first?

Hi Ralph, I don’t normally carry people in the back, but the rear door might have been opened to put stuff on the back seat before the journey. This would have been done before opening a front door.

Yeah that’s the exact circumstance to make the message appear

(My bolds.)

Sounds like it's a different thing.

I can’t see anything wrong and didn’t completely remove the seat so didn’t disconnect anything.

No it’s the same thing I just didn’t explain it very well you don’t get the message until you turn off

Its a new feature Toyota have written in to some of there newer products software to remind people they may have left a child ( or something of value ) in the back of the car.

I believe the 23 MY Corolla will also have this feature.

You should be able to turn the message off under "Settings:Vehicle" on your main display screen.

Must admit I thought I had knocked a connector off or trapped a wire!

It will take about 10 nano seconds before the brain blanks the message.

My car reports my driving and mpg after I switch off. In practise I have my door open and the message gone long before I remember to look.

The brain soon learns to ignore repetitive trivia but almost immediately recognise something new.

Whatever next, I wonder, "Have you shut and locked your front house door?" "Have you eaten your breakfast?"

Unfortunately this is the way the world is going with the state of each younger generation 🤣

You know, I think that's actually not a bad feature. Of course I never forget something I left on the back seat ... 🤣

But I'm little worried about you not thinking a child is of value 🤔

Childfree by choice lifestyle for both missus & me.

That's a good reason to own a C-HR 🤣

Okay, so today before our journey, I noticed my wife opened the NS back door first to put some stuff on the back seat, when we stopped we got the message about checking the back seat. When we set off again we didn’t open a back door and when we stopped again, no message.

Sounds like it's just a simple bit of software logic code that's been added involving the rear door switches.

As said above, it is a customer switchable option.  Just switched mine off.

I leave mine on.  It does no harm to be reminded and if I know the reason for opening the door I just ignore it.  It cast me nearly 50k to get the same feature on a Lexus so I ain’t wasting it 😉

  • 11 months later...

Put a heavy bag on the rear seat and a busser will go off so you have to pull the bag away from the sensor or its its to regular disable it in settings.

I'm sure I get the message even though I didn't go in the back, and there's nothing on the seats.

I switched it off on mine - it can remind me all it wants but I'll still get distracted and forget!!

A bit like when the missus nags me to do the hoovering, then asks if I like the new dress she’s bought..

We have the dog in the back and use this to silence the alarm.

We've also turned off the check rear seat warning in the settings menu.
