Have messages read out and respond using voice.

You don't need Android Auto for that - the infotainment unit can do it on its own.

Yes it does, my Mrs sent me a text on the way to work on Sunday about the dog. It included the word sausage, which given I'm a 41 year old child made me laugh.

How do you do that? I get send text messages all the time but my Yaris never reads them to me...! Or is it just a Corolla thing...?

When I get an SMS text a message appears (on the dash I think) asking me if I want it read it out loud. Then you can choose to dictate a reply. Although the one time I tried to dictate a reply it did a pretty lousy job so I gave up.

Hmm, I don't think I've seen mine do that... I'll have to test it next time I have a willing passenger...!

I also wouldn't trust the voice recognition much - So far it's achieved about a 5% success rate when I've told it to call someone, and usually calls totally the wrong person

I think the inside of the Yaris is just too noisy for the voice recognition system to work properly...

Part of my job involves writing software to utilise voice recognition systems. I wasn't at all impressed by the transcription the Corolla offered. They have either bought in a really cheap system or else it's a cheap microphone. Possibly both.

Might just be a French built vehicle quirk - the voice recognition on my previous Peugeot also built in France was useless as well.

We use Apple Carplay in both the Yaris (no Nav) and in the Corolla my22, prefer Waze to the inbuilt system

Built in maps are ok, some great POI's actually,  but shockingly bad traffic.

I use AA heavily,  and tomtom/sygic, both work brilliantly.

Add in Ringo for parking, and excellent hands free messaging,  it's a win win.

Shame it isn't wireless though, and the data port location is a shocker!

Strange that, I had Citroens before the Corolla and never had a problem. The Corolla needs more info to find a destination.

In the Corolla, travelling at 60, typical audio volume was 30-36 for speech.  In the Yaris Cross 11-12.

Now the Corolla was much noisier or the scaling is different.

The Toyota sat nav is fine while being kept up to date. I have switched to Google Maps rather than pay for updates and there isn't much to choose between them. The big benefit of the Toyota system is that it doesn't need an internet connection to calculate a route - something brought home to me recently.

Thanks for your swift reply. I didn't think about the possible Internet problem. Very relevant, especially up here in rural North East Scotland.

Download your maps before you leave.  Planning some journey's to places you haven't been to before?  Download these routes too, then you don't need to worry about an Internet connection.  Plus if you don't and lose Internet Google maps will continue to direct you and will let you know when you're back online.

I cannot go back to being without AA.

For my calls, messages and Plexamp for starters is just the best.  Plus asking Google to direct me to wherever is such a convenience.  Also, I don't run the risk of reaching for my phone, like the rest of the moron's on the road.

Drawback?  Wondering why your backside is getting hot because you've switched on the heated seats by accident when you've dropped your phone in the most awkward place ever.

Hi Guys

Thanks again for all the replies.  Now got my new car and presently surprised that it came with a different sat-nav to the one in the test drive car. The new one has no push buttons on the sides.  The voice control for navigation is very good.

Negative - no ordered towbar! But that's another story........

It's the newer Smart Connect system.

On the Yaris Cross you have a choice.  You can have the Smart Connect, larger cleaner screen and fewer buttons, the rest are soft.  Or you can order the City Pack at £100 extra (Feb 22) which gives you adjusting reversing guidelines and all round clearance imagery.  Unfortunately this is only available with the old Touch to Go screen.

For my money save £120 and go with Smart Connect on the Yaris X.

Does the new Corolla  offer something like the City Pack?

No, there is no equivalent.  Has your smart connect been reliable?

So better use AA or ACP 😉

Is there any chance that you’ve got the MY23 ? Or the multimedia unit from it ? 🤔

Nah. I mostly ignore incoming messages. I only tried to reply once out of curiosity.

I'm not sure but Parker's June 22 review states that the 2023 upgrade includes a 10.5" sat nav screen that's the same as mine.

Mine is a my22, it has no buttons, still an 8" screen with a larger border and just 1 volume knob.

The my23 has a larger screen with no volume knob.

Where is the logic in this ? You order one type of configuration car , but receive something different …. Not even the new one , improved one … but something worse than what you knew that you are receiving 🤷‍♂️
