Orange check engine light

Got a constant orange check engine light whilst on a drive just now and won't disappear.

Car drives fine, no odd noises

Full service was done a month ago and MOT due in two weeks.

What's the best course of action ?

Take it back to your service guy and will probably give it a diagnostic check.

I had a Corolla a long time ago with a similar problem. There was no drop off in performance. The car was still under warranty at the time and the car was inspected and fault light reset twice and then reappeared after a number of days. The fault was eventually diagnosed as an intermittent ignition  fault that fleetingly caused warning light and then disappeared. I think it was finally found to be either a spark plug or ignition coil. Seemingly  an intermittent fault would bring check engine light up then disappear leaving car running perfectly.

Diagnostic first step , you can do yourself with suitable obd 2 and app on your phone. Carista are one of the best , yesterday someone posted half price deal on Amazon and I got one for my dad. I own one since 2020 and been very useful to run diagnostics. 👍

Thanks guys

I'll try the mechanic first and see if they can use one of theirs, saves me having to buy one. If not, is it obd 1 or 2 I need to buy ?

Results are in.

Is it safe to drive and wait a couple of weeks for the MOT or not ? The last job I had done on the car was the exhaust backbox/muffler  replaced as it had snapped into two. Maybe related ?

An EML (Engine Management Light) illuminated is an MOT fail.

Sounds like a coincidence, if it was OK before I would say that’s a sensor disconnected or wire loose, dislodged when then they replaced the back box. Would speak to original garage that did the work. They will probably say corroded connection or something.

If it was my car I would have no worries about driving the car however not sure why you wish to wait until the MOT.

Like others have mentioned will fail with the EML on.

As you know it needs fixing fast before its mot.

You need the a code reader it may not be exhaust it can be air flow filter and some other faults that turnlight engine manument  light on.

Yeah what I mean was they could fix it on the day of the MOT as its less than two weeks away. I'll contact them ASAP and see if I can get it in sooner
