Another injector problem - maybe ?

I have a 2009 Avensis 2.2D with 160k miles.

I am experiencing what could be described as misfiring. This only occurs above 2000rpm. At tickover and below 2k rpm the engine appears to be fine. It starts OK.

Whilst driving under load, once revs reach 2k there appears to be a ‘fluttering’ feeling as if the engine is running partially on 3 cylinders.

I must add that about 6 months ago one of the injectors failed whilst in France. I had no chance to investigate and it was repaired at a garage. It was obvious that it was only running on 3 cylinders even at tickover. One of the injectors was replaced together with various seals and a new fuel filter. It ran fine until a couple of months ago when this latest problem appeared. Having experienced a total failure of an injector, this does not feel like that but could be a pre-cursor to it.

Are there any sensors that only come into play at 2k rpm that may have failed? Does the turbo only have any influence at those rpm’s ? Could a reduced fuel flow or pressure be the problem? Fuel consumption seems to have got worse, probably through having to work the engine harder.

Any idea from the experts? Is it worth taking the injectors out and having them tested by a diesel specialist ?

Thanks.

Haydn

Yes, I think any fueling issue is a bit of a headache.

Mind you, we get used to everything being so reliable. Mine is 13yrs old and has >160k miles. Something has to wear out eventually. Its a pity they are too expensive just to replace. :-(
