Spongy brakes

Hi.

I have a 2003 Avensis which has developed spongy brakes.  It's a T25 hatchback, 1794cc, around 120,000 miles.  I took it to my local garage who changed the brake fluid, but that only made the problem worse.  I often have to pump the brakes as the travel is too great, and have stopped using the car altogether now.  I've heard that it could be a problem with the master cylinder.  If that's the case, I'd appreciate advice on where to source a replacement, or even a rebuild kit.

You could find a secondhand master cylinder from a breakers. Also, get the garage to check all flexible brake lines to make sure none of them is bulging. ABS units can be a bit of a pain to bleed if they've been drained - but I assume your mechanic is experienced and fully aware.

Thanks for the advice, APS.  I've now had a mobile mechanic look at it and he's fairly sure it's the master cylinder.  He reckons he can get a new one at a reasonable price and is going to check tomorrow (Monday).
