Definitely look into other deterrents, I'm still waiting on plates for ours to arrive at the dealership 😞

Took my car in today to get mot/ wipers and security plates. I asked if they had any information on another security fix that they were supposed to announce by end of April but he says he knows about the expected announcement but says that there is just no information from Toyota yet, but he thinks it may be software update.

Has anything come out yet regarding the security fix?

Nope, I think only that it may take them a little longer

A friend of mine has just received this from their insurance company, and he has the older generation RAV4... I'm guessing those are also vulnerable... Also that all our insurance will go up on renewal!

Any good immo installers in Hertfordshire?

Interesting! What I want to know is what's happening about this immobiliser that Toyota were supposed to be offering owners by the end of April.

Think there is a trip to the dealer coming on to sort this once and for all.

Good luck with that Terry, some dealers are only just hearing about the CanBus plates 🤣

Nothing seems to move quickly in filtering information down to the dealerships.

Maybe it's not Thatcham & / or TASSA approved 🤔

Might explain why it's never been offered in the UK before while it's popular & promoted over in Europe.

When I spoke to my dealer 1 week ago, they said the security update would be software. Something that detects a failure or disconnection (Can bus), or something along these lines. it wouldn't be an immobiliser. Toyota would probably charge 70 pounds for the software update though... 🤑

If it was just going to be a simple software update you would think it would be best for Toyota dealers to just squirt it in at the vehicles next workshop visit.

yes, probably right. Toyota will update software and say they have done their job. Whilst insurers will force all owners to install immobilisers at their own expense and raise insurance premiums

Well I popped in to my local dealer this morning and they said that they were aware of this security update but have heard nothing to date 🙄🙄. This is all very well if your insurance isn't due for renewal as I suspect that this will now become an issue.I get the impression that insurance companies are not that interested in if an owner has had the plates fitted or not. I thought that a fix had already been issued for Lexus so what is the problem for Toyota owners.

Just get on with it Toyota, you created this problem with bad design so fix it ASAP.

Only what I have read on this forum. Pretty sure that there are comments about the Lexus fix in this thread if you trawl through it.

The Lexus position is here: Lexus UK statement on vehicle theft

And from a reply yesterday "We are currently working on further security enhancements, but have no update to offer at the moment. Please keep an eye on this page for any updates." we can conclude that the positions for Lexus and Toyota are identical - i.e. waiting for news ...

Hi , yes I am aware of that Mike, The comment was frustration at Toyota's laid back attitude to all of this.Toyota arn't the ones who will have to carry the extra costs of insurance and those nominal charges that they are making for the plates and these (immobilisers ) or whatever they are coming up with.
When they get around to it!!!

I think it’s poor that Toyota Insurance (not sure if it’s underwritten by a larger insurance company) are refusing to provide cover unless  secondary Thatcham Category 2 immobilisers or TASSA approved immobilisers are fitted.

It’s an admission that they are producing a product with unacceptable security levels, if they think more security is necessary then it should be fitted at the factory as standard.

Couldn't agree more, this is a very sad state of affairs. Basically they are producing a second rate product at an inflated price and now charging us to put it right. We are now getting the backlash from the insurance companies.

Now imagine a car financed by Toyota, and insured by Toyota... At least Toyota wouldn't even provide us a quote... But yea, ill give it until the end of the year before going for a third party immo.

It is fitted at the factory. HEVs MY2023 onwards and all PHEVs are not vulnerable to the CAN attack. The problem only exists for older HEVs 2019 to 2022 so fitting "at the factory" is a bit late but they are already providing one physical solution and have announce that they are working on another.
What more do people expect them to do?

I expect them to get on with it and treat it with a lot more urgency than they are now.Took them long enough to come up with the plates.Toyota stated that the fix would be available end of April/ beginning of May. In fairness they didn't say what year!

Bottom line is that these are not cheap cars but they do lack basic security.

No, they do not lack basic security. The way they are stolen is not "basic" by any means; it is a very sophisticated and technical attack.

I am not supporting Toyota as I think the car has a fundamental design flaw in the flimsy nature of the wheel arches - they should have been steel. Also the fact that the vehicle security is on the same CAN, and unprotected, as the safety systems. Either a separate CAN or encrypted/signed security comms would have prevented the problem. The latter has been implemented in later cars and all PHEVs.

My car is affected but is unlikely to disappear due to the plates having been fitted. I also have a StopLock Pro and I am looking forward to, what is rumoured to be, a software update to close off the problem.

This stuff cannot be magicked out of thin air and Toyota are not going to drop everything just to concentrate on solving a problem for what is, comparatively speaking, a small group of people. They have released one solution and have announced that another coming, and there are always third party options for those that just can't wait.

Perspective and patience are the order of the day.

Yeah, but I want mine NOW! ... 😄

I added a comment to the magazine article yesterday, asking for an update on timescales since they are now a month behind where they suggested they might be. It is currently:

"awaiting moderation" ... I believe that I enquired in a very moderate fashion ... 😉

I'll feed back any information that I get in due course.

Re, your last comment , we shall have to agree to disagree. I had my own very successful business for 30 years and whenever we had a problem with a customer we dealt with it promptly and courteously. The customer had already paid for their goods and that was the least we could do.It's called good old fashioned manners.
