Yaris 2014 Day Running Lights

Hi all, I'm wanting to pick your brains,

My Yaris 2014 doesn’t have Day Running Lights and which I would like to change.  I can’t see a setting anywhere to activate DRL.

I see my options therefore are to buy some off eBay etc and fit / wire them in them in to an engine running live supply, OR pick up an engine running live and send this through a relay to switch on the existing headlights (dip beam).

I was thinking the eBay option would be the easiest but unless I spend some decent money the lights will be cheap and probably break or get damp inside within a few years.  So, I am now tempted to go down the relay to power the existing headlights.  My only concern here is feeding a 12v supply to the headlights (through a relay) would that feed anything else that I don’t want, and then if the lights were on and I turned on the headlights via the stalk what might happen.  I think it would be okay.

Thoughts on either approach would be welcomed.

I seem to remember the fuses location was marked up in fusebox so you may only need to sort out two fuses.

Locate fuse box then fit in a fuse and see if your side lights are on when you turn on the ignition.

See info on inside of fusebox cover.

drl are only active with the handbrake released, they don't need programming 1 fuse and 1 relay

if it's a preface lift car, they don't have the feature and no LEDs in the headlights

If you want, I can pull up the diagrams

Quick update.

After checking where I could fit DRL to the grill without damaging it too much I deferred the idea until after Christmas.

Now as it happens on my drive north to visit relatives a brake light popped in my Volvo displaying a message on the dash.  I said I'll fix that when I get home as I like to keep my cars spot on.  The fix was easy which then led me to think I should have a spare bulb kit in each car.

The Volvo is 2005 old school so I already had pretty much all the bulbs I needed which then turned me to the Yaris.

Going through the owners book I have it is quite a basic guide so I checked each style of bulb fitted to the car.

I now know the headlights are projector type (seeing the price of a replacement I hope they don't pop!), front indicator is a new one on me and so is the 5w/21w rear tail/stop wedge bulb.  Never seen one that big before.  And so it happens that is what is also fitted to the front sidelights but strangely the bulb holder is the same as the rear tail/stop with three wires.  Checking these bulbs with a multimeter I found the side light element was OK but the 21w side was dead.  That made me think that the 21w must be DRL but then checking the socket again with a multimeter that didn't show any power so I thought maybe they are not active on my model but could I make them active 🙂

The bulbs only had continuity on the 5w side so I replaced the bulb just to be sure but still no DRL.

Today I checked some other download manuals I have for fuses numbers etc and happen to glance through a more details owners manual for the car where it states;

Daytime running light system
To make your vehicle more visible to other drivers, the daytime running lights turn on automatically when the parking brake lever is released, if engine is started. (However, these lights will dim when the headlight switch is operated manually or the automatic headlight system turns on the tail lights.) Daytime running lights are not designed for use at night

The important bit I picked up here is engine running and handbrake off, so off I toddle to the garage, start the car and release the handbrake and would you Adam & Eve it the DRL's lit up.

So all this goes to prove that the basic owners manual I have is not perfect and maybe I should pick up the more detailed version and RTFM again !!

I am now a happy punter, not having to buy DRL's, not having to splice them into the car and I found out something new.

You could say Happy New Year.
