Hello Toyota lovers,

I would like to ask for a help with oil choice for my Toyota Corolla 1.4D4D-2004 which has passed 140XXX miles. Which oil brand and which characteristics would you recommend to me? I am using Liqui Moly 5W-40 at this moment shown in the pocture bellow. I recognised a oil consumption of around 0.6-0.7litres for approximately 3200 miles. Is that a normal oil consumption? What’s the normal oil consumption for a that years old car and that miles traveled?

I found not normal working engine in winter at temperature of under 0 degrees celsius. But that’s only for 10-15 seconds and after that period everything is fine. I was in Toyota servis and they told me that everything is okay with my car. Everything I recognised is that the turbine is openning on time, the car is accelerating fine, but at around 2500rpm the car is getting even more power and the acceleration is getting higher. Is that normal or the turbine is working inappropriately? And if the oil consumption is too big, could that be caused by the turbine?

Sounds normal to me. Oil consumption is a little higher, but nothing extreme. Yes, a worn turbo could cause increased oil consumption. At the levels you have, I would not worry.

The increase in torque/acceleration after 2500 rpm sounds normal. This generation of diesel engines were a little old-fashioned and suffered with a narrow power band and turbo lag. So, unless you've noticed a significant change in characteristics, I'd say that is normal for that car.

As far as I am able to see, your car's oil consumption is fine. By your accounts, that gives around 14 ml of oil consumption per 1000 km. If your numbers and my calculation is correct, that is excellent.

My Auris 1.4 D4D with 202000 km consumes aroung 62 ml of oil per 1000 km.

As Toyota is concerned, everything is alright until 1 liter of consumption per 1000 km.

Regarding the problem you mention (low temp startup), did you change your glowplugs? Is your MAF sensor clean? How blocked are your EGR valve, intake manifold and throttle body?

Regarding the turbo issue, I don't see any. Maximum boost for the 1.4 D4D is around those RPMs 2300-2500 RPMs... Your turbo seems to be working fine.

Thank you for your reply jcps001,

It comes around 140ml per 1000km.

In Toyota servis told me that the glow plugs, EGR etc. is okay but that I should clean up the intake manifold. Before around 500km the check engine lamp has shown, I checked that and the computer showed EGR. So I cleaned it up. I asked the mechanic to clean up the intake manifold too, but as he checked he told me that the condition of the intake manifold is okay for diesel engine. The EGR’s diameter by manufacturer is 25mm and it had been already blocked with a diameter of 4mm. Now I’m waiting for another winter to check if everything is okay. I hope I have solved the problem.

I have one more question for you. Which oil do you use for your Toyota? Is it 5W-40 or anything else?

Yep, sorry, missed the zero...!

Right now, and for two years (this is the second one), I've been using Ravenol's FDS 5w30. Prior to that, I used Castrol Edge 5w40.

I notice a somewhat higher consumption with the Ravenol, but it is a lighter oil and seems to evaporate more than Castrol's Edge 5w40.

So far, seems like the little engine likes it. So I think I'll stick around with it for awhile.
