MOT failure, rear suspension arms

Avensis 2.0d4d ..06 plate. 92,000m

Its failed the MOT on both rear suspension arms, which is surprising as they don't seem to have got that much worse since the summer, anyway ?has anyone else's car failed on these ,if so ? is it the kind of task an Amateur  Mechanic like myself  would consider taking on.

I have had a double blow really on the car this last couple of months, as the Clutch  and DMF need replacing as well so beginning to wonder it's time to get rid to the Scrapyard in the sky.

?Any advice welcome good or bad.

The job itself is quite straight forward, but if you do not have access to a ramp it can be quite dangerous jacking up on the ground and working on it,this car is very heavy, probably best to get a quote from a garage, parts can be around £140.00 but anti roll bar links might as well be done at the same time so costs might go up. The car looks good and a more spacious estate you will not find and with second hand car prices astronomical it probably will be worth saving the car.

Thank you for reply, yes i have thought that maybe I should keep the car, and have a go at the repair ,my local garage that did the MOT want £550 for doing the job ,I have axle stands and a hard standing, thing  is I'm getting a little older nowadays, so I hold no thrill about doing the task like I used to have .And also there is the clutch which is showing signs of wear so that's adding to the costs. Its a shame the car has only done 92,000,so I'm looking at selling it now as a MOT failure, ill probably look at getting £450 to £500 as it stands.

Buy a new arm with bushing already fitted.

jack up then add extra support as so it cannot come down onto you.

Next year expect to replace the one on opposite side.

They have both failed in either side Derek unfortunately. I have axle stands so not worried about the car coming down onto me.

Good luck and best wishes what ever you decide to do.

Well i have come to the conclusion that it's time to part company with the car which has served me well after nigh on 10 years with very little problems until now.

The clutch and the DMF are on their  way out so they need changing as well as the  rear suspension arms, there are other things that need attention as well so I'm looking at just over a grand to sort it.so I'm cutting my losses and i have used the thousand and odd on a new one. Oh well I'll be sorry to see it go. Just like to add that this Forum is one of the best.
