PHEV Competition…..

I have just read a review of the new Mazda CX60 PHEV….. to be honest it is what the RAV PHEV should offer. The Mazda interior is superb and actually looks like an almost £50k car, and it tows 2500kg. The EV range is less but overall it impressses. I know Mazda have a technical sharing agreement with Toyota - I wonder how much Toyota tech it uses directly or indirectly? I could be tempted…..

Big issue for me with Mazda is that the are loved by mice. I don't know why but I've had many of them and all were eaten by mice. Fiat also seem to be on the favourites list for chewing up of insulation, electrics etc. Ford seem to be off the menu together with Jeep and Morgan. No idea why, however I've found coffee grinds sprinkled around where you park will ward them off as they can't stand the smell. Of course for anyone not living in the country I guess this won't be a problem - then they wouldn't be needing an SUV either I guess.

I did a test drive in a Mazda CX-5 before I bought the Subaru XV the Mazda had the hardest bumpiest ride I’ve every experienced. They would need to have significantly improved the ride for me and I would not want to sacrifice EV range, I’d rather that went up.

This has happened to me twice. (Not on my Toyota) I was told they like fibre underguards like some cars have, and some wiring is made from soya which is edible. Mice like to chew wires anyway, but with soya wiring they get some nourishment too. This site https://www.motorverso.com/which-cars-have-soy-based-wiring/#:~:text=Since the start of the, powered by soy-based insulations. is American, but has a lot of info on this issue. Apparently pretty much all manufacturers use it now including Toyota. I now keep mousetraps round the car, and I use a bittering spray under the bonnet.

The high voltage orange cables insulation is made of organic plastics that seems to be favourable by the rodents. Once even when I was inside parked car I noticed something was chewing underneath. I know that place is full of big long tail fellas and I realised quickly what was happening. Just kicked the footwell to make some noise and the thing has run away quickly, no noise after that. 🐭🪤 I know they does not like peppermint, but didn’t know about the coffee beans. Thanks for that 👌👍 I am going to throw some around.

I think that’s one of the problems of having a main stream and luxury version of the same car with the Toyota/ Lexus set up. Mazda put all of their efforts into producing one car which as you say does look like a very impressive package.

The Mazda official 39 mile EV range would annoy me, as a company car its just 1 mile short of an extra 4% less BIK tax, the RAV is comfortable in the lower band.

According to Whatcar the ride is still not brilliant which would be the final nail in the coffin for me, can't do hard cars any more.

I think the Kuga PHEV remains the biggest competition, its interior might only be 'adequate' but it does do the 40 miles EV range so lower BIK band and is sensibly priced so lease rates not too bad. Handling is good, ride decent. The biggest disappointment is lack of power. Again, adequate but should have been much more.

The ride in the RAV is nothing to write home about either. I do agree though the EV range is frustrating and should be at least 50miles to be attractive.
