Brake Fluid change

Hi All,

Hope everyone is well.

I am thinking of changing the brake fluid while doing the brake service and was wondering if I can use my old pressure bleeder like I did on my old corolla.

I tried look in to the techstream software, it only takes me through the steps for 2 person process and I am not sure if it would cycle the ABS.

With the corolla I used to bleed 2nd time after skidding (safely 🙂 ) the wheels to activate the abs pump, I just don't have the knack anymore, getting old I think.

Any thoughts?

Regards

Hi,

If the repair manual says two persons old school style pump and hold the brake pedal then best to do it that way. Abs pump with or without drainage not a big deal, the most important when bleeding the system is to open the callipers bleeder and let the old fluid drains from there. The brake cylinders on each wheel are the places where moisture enter into the system and causes rust and all issues. My method is as follows:

Suck the old fluid from the tank as much as I can

Add new fluid to the tank full over max level

Do the pump and hold with help of gf or friend

Go all around each corner, can start front or rear , not a big difference and add fluid as necessary.

As long as you don’t messed up with the abs pump or introduce air inside you won’t have any problems.
Can get yourself one of these if you haven’t got already one. 👍

Thanks Tony for the link, will order one.

Yes, with the old corolla I used to empty the tank, fill with new fluid, screw on the pressure bottle (home made) and pump it up to 10-15psi, then go round bleeding nipples on each corner.

The Auris I thought had more electronics so thought using the software but I think its more for Hybrid versions.

I'll have a look at the service manual, I am pretty sure my petrol is still probably old school.

Regards.

I'm sure that Lidl have a brake fluid tester in the middle aisle for £5.99.

But, if you're going to bleed the system there's no point in buying one.

If I was working on my own I used a Gunson EEZIBLEED hydralic brake bleed kit.

Plus spare tyre or compressor set at 15PSI

Note compressor not a 12 volt tyre inflator.

Brake fluid change is not my favorite job.  I did it every 5-8 years whenever the water content is between 1-2%.  In Auris hybrid, the water content is still less than 1% after 4 years and the color is identical to new brake fluid, clear amber.   I prefer spend my time on cleaning the brake every 2 years instead.  Just remove the pads, press the piston, clean the calipers and the brake hardware.   I grease the sliding pins and contact between the pads   and the  calipers with silicon grease.  I also pressure wash the underbody and brake area after snowy days.  I never had any problems with the brake lines or fluid on hybrid, but sometime the disc and sliding pins get corroded from salt on the road.  A good video for hybrid
