Satnav did not come with our car so we use both Waze and Google on our phone for navigation. Whilst these are good but do have problems, I was wondering how good the pre installed satnav systems are and do they suffer from any issues?

My sat nav has locked up a few times and sent me round the same roads. Use google if I have to but always carry a map in the car just in case. Boys think it's funny if we drive round and round.

Hi Bob, sat nav on Toyota’s have not had great reputation. And to have it installed will cost you an arm and both legs 👎. I bought a Garmin with free lifetime updates, it’s excellent. You can buy online for small money around £100 for a reasonably good one. I don’t use it every day but I have found it very good when going to unknown places. Just stick in a postcode or if in Ireland it’s called eircode.

I haven't had any problem with my built in sat nav directions wise but i haven't managed to get my phone linked properly for live traffic updates the speed camera alerts work fine and bluetooth music and calls are also working like they should,  the stand-alone ones are good but i prefer not to have trailing wires and bracket stuck to the screen.

On my previous car I had both a built in satnav (2005 vintage but new maps) and a Garmin with much better mapping and utility that I had on my windscreen.  My garage hardwired the power so no trailing wires.  It was well placed and just off to one side but ....

And this depends entirely on your windscreen.  I did consider fitting it on my Corolla for Continental travel but the Corolla's windscreen was quite unsuitable.  The slope of the screen meant the Satnav would have been much further away.

Look at how you might mount a standalone before you go that route.

If you are only going to use it occasionally one of the weighted nonslip mats could be the solution rather than sticking it to the screen.

Max, that would have been a good solution.  Now with a Smart Connect system I am more confident.  It presents several routes, I am not sure if it is limited to just 3.  You can press your preferred route and it changes from grey to blue.  You can then select a different one.  Much easier.

Hi Bernard, have you tried google and waze navigation apps to know how they compare with the GarmIn.

Hi Max, does your sat navi not give live traffic updates.

Yes it does if you can get it to work.

For some reason i cannot get my phone to work with it, i have bluetooth set up which is working fine (hands free calls and music playback from phone etc) but when i follow the instructions below i keep getting a "cannot connect to internet" message it's probably something i am doing wrong but having spent many half hours sat in the car going through all the steps i decided to give up and use the sat nav without it.

I have traffic alerts set up on the radio so i shouldn't miss any updates and TBH i don't do a lot of motorway driving so i am not to worried about not having it connected.

Yes I’ve tried Google maps, but it doesn’t contain all the additional information that the Garmin sat nav does.

I use a Garmin sat nav at work and I have found in towns etc it's fine but when our in the countryside in villages etc  it's not as accurate.

Fascinating video and a display quite different from my MY19 Corolla.  It looks better than the MY21 Yaris Cross too.

Hi Max
As someone that has not had a pre installed sat nav in any of the cars we have owned I am going to ask the same question to some of the members who have replied to this post.  When I use either Waze or Google I do not need to look at the phone as I take the verbal instructions.  I was wondering is it not distracting looking at the screen map or do you just listen to the navigation instructions. Have you ever lost the verbal communication.

Hi Roy,
Like most of this technology it takes some time to understand the setup and even while following instructions one mistake can happen and it is extremely frustrating. I don't know if there is a video out there which might help with this or ask another member.
I am interested to know if you find it distracting when driving to look at the screen or do you just rely on the verbal navigation instructions.

I don't find it distracting at all, like you i listen to the directions then have a quick glance to see i am going in the right direction,  i particularly like the motorway junction view below -

The junction view is for illustration purpose only (not Toyota sat-nav)

That junction view would be very useful, esp. with some of the weird satnav instructions I've had, "In the next mile keep right and bear left and take the 3rd left on the right" :confused1:

As I said  "The junction view is for illustration purpose only (not Toyota sat-nav)" but it is very close to how it looks on the Toyota sat-nav it's a godsend when you are on a busy junction with several exits.

Hi Mark,

When your sat nav is working do you find it distracting looking at the screen map or do you just listen to the verbal navigation.

Cyker, I am asking those that have replied on this post whether they find it distracting looking at the sat navigation screen when driving or do you just listen to the verbal directions.

Personally, I'd say 90-95% verbal instruction - I find most satnav displays too small or too hard to glance at; Usually when you're making turns and such is when you need most concentration on the road, esp. with these stupid new rules that say you have to yield to pedestrians at junctions - It makes turning far more dangerous as you have to spot them and plan far more in advance than before so you don't end up having to stop and wait for them to cross while your backside is hanging out for some inattentive driver to crash into it.

I just don't have the extra capacity to look away from the road at a screen for more than a glance; That's where a HUD/AR satnav display would come in handy as I wouldn't have to glance away at all, but even if my Mk4 had built-in satnav, the satnav display on the HUD is not much more useful than what gets shown on the main infotainment display from what I've seen...

Compared to the built in sat-nav on my 2019 Corolla, Waze via CarPlay is a revelation!  The Toyota version has terrible voice recognition and poor search ability (cannot find destination etc). Whereas Waze has great voice rec, very rarely can’t find my destination (and going for a variant of the address gets round that normally) and excellent traffic alerts / re-routing. And free updates….
