I prefer Waze over the sat nav system in my Avensis and mostly, I follow the verbal instructions.

Hi Stephen, we go between Waze and Google and like you follow the verbal. It's interesting to know if those that have pre installed  sat nav installed find it distracting looking at the screen.

I use my old stick-to-the-windsreen sat-nav when I have to, or Co_pilot on my iPhone...

Can't beat old methods sometimes. Asking everyone if looking at the screen either pre installed sat nav or mobile phone is distracting while driving and if they just listen to the verbal navigation instructions.

I use both visual and audio on my old 2015 Tom Tom, usually it's possible to have a good layout in your head before a junction.

Allowing full concentration on road and the traffic.

The best tip of all that I can offer however, is never lend anyone your Tom Tom.

The one before this got borrowed, never seen it since.

Hi Lawrence,
yes it seems that they do suffer from a lot of issues. I would also ask you the same question as above do you find it distracting when driving looking at the screen map or do you just use the verbal navigation instructions.

Personally, I'd say 90-95% verbal instruction - I find most satnav displays too small or too hard to glance at; Usually when you're making turns and such is when you need most concentration on the road, esp. with these stupid new rules that say you have to yield to pedestrians at junctions - It makes turning far more dangerous as you have to spot them and plan far more in advance than before so you don't end up having to stop and wait for them to cross while your backside is hanging out for some inattentive driver to crash into it.

I just don't have the extra capacity to look away from the road at a screen for more than a glance; That's where a HUD/AR satnav display would come in handy as I wouldn't have to glance away at all, but even if my Mk4 had built-in satnav, the satnav display on the HUD is not much more useful than what gets shown on the main infotainment display from what I've seen...

agreed ,in older cars just a distraction, sited to low,if a sunny day cant see anything.

Paul, I think when you lent your Tom Tom you should have named it Gone Gone😂

Ain't that the truth Bper, the old saying that if you can afford to give rather than lend , that is a much better option.

You just lose the Tom Tom,money,or anything else you lend, and as a bonus, the borrower aswell.

I once lent a moocher a fiver in the full knowledge I would not get it back just so I could say next time, no, you still owe me a fiver.

Of course the borrower/moocher has always forgotten, and seems surprised.

It's always a sweet moment.

Yes I’ve tried Google maps, but it doesn’t contain all the additional information that the Garmin sat nav does.

Hi Bernard,
Have looked at both the Garmin and Tom Tom sat nav's but will need to check then both out. As stated in other posts I am also asking is it not distracting when driving to look at the screen map or do you just use the verbal navigation

I have the Garmin stuck to the windscreen and it’s almost like a HUD, I really don’t find it a distraction at all flicking my vision from the road to the Garmin screen because both are on the same eye level, whilst listening to the voice commands. The sat nav on the touchscreen means that when viewing it you will have to change your eye levels for longer, therefore increasing the chances of a traffic event.. Hope that my experience helps guide you to the right choice for you.

My sat nav has locked up a few times and sent me round the same roads. Use google if I have to but always carry a map in the car just in case. Boys think it's funny if we drive round and round.

Hi Mike, I have asked all that have responded to this post do you find looking at the sat nav screen distracting or do you just listen to the verbal navigation.  Of course when it works😀

Compared to the built in sat-nav on my 2019 Corolla, Waze via CarPlay is a revelation!  The Toyota version has terrible voice recognition and poor search ability (cannot find destination etc). Whereas Waze has great voice rec, very rarely can’t find my destination (and going for a variant of the address gets round that normally) and excellent traffic alerts / re-routing. And free updates….

I agree that Waze is good, I am asking everyone that replied to this post if you have find when installed the sat navigation distracting when driving or do you just listen to the verbal navigation  instructions.

If you look at the video below you can see the screen is basically at the same level as your speedo etc so it's no more distracting for me than glancing at the speed, it's not like you watch the sat-nav all the time just a glance when you get a voice command to make sure you are going the right way.

The sat navigation is at the same height as the screen in our Auris. Is the screen big enough on you car to see clearly the direction when driving.

Bob I do find it distracting when driving and especially when the boys are in the car I can't take my eyes off the road . I only listen to the voice.
