catalytic converter

How many catalytic converters are there on a 2009 TOYOTA Auris  1.33 dual vvti, 1NRFE engine 74kw?

I see the one  incorporated into the exhaust manifold with an oxygen sensor fitting before and after it.  In seeking a replacement suppliers are asking if I want the manifold one or the lower pipe one. That is the one in the lower pipe which connects to the bottom of the exhaust manifold /upper cat.

This has arisen because I am getting the trouble code for an inefficient catalytic converter

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks

If asked I would have said two, the one on the manifold and the one further along the exhaust system. You obviously need to be sure though.

One thought is 'why', why has it failed. The 1NRFE is notorious for oil burning (I have one) and I wonder if yours is similar, and contamination is perhaps a cause in your case. I tend to do longish runs and it always gets fully up to temperature for extensive periods of time. Oil consumption on mine is around a litre per 800 miles and mileage close to 90k.

Well I've had success in the past using a product called Mannol 500ml, catalytic System cleaner. Its like an intravenous  drip into the air intake and improved the performance of the car greatly. I've just used this stuff again  and will see how the car behaves. The life of a cat is about 100,000 miles and I have got 105000 on the clock so I might have to bite the bullet.

Hence my discovery that their might be 2 catalytic  converters on the car.

The life of car can be double or triple that mileage for sure. You can also try wynns catalytic converter and lambda sensor cleaner,  add in the fuel as per the instructions, works great and helps a lot with contaminated exhaust system.

A code is a symptom, not a fault - I would physically test the 2 o2 sensors, a slow or intermittent sensor can be a cause but not throwing a code other that a P0420

Yes, I'm getting P0420  about once a day. The 2 O2 sensors are new, ( under 5000 miles),  and the engine was flushed and had an oil and filter change 5000 miles ago.

I'm thinking the code p0420 is telling me the Catalytic converter  has reached the end of its life at 105000 miles .

I do a 700 mile round trip every month and I just clear the P0420 fault code when it appears. Its starting to irritate me because the check engine light comes on and the "check engine" message  obscures the instruments.

Hence, my enquiry as to how many catalytic converters there are on this vehicle.

Main cat is part of the manifold and a secondary passive cat after the post cat (B1S2) sensor

i take it you have no exhaust leaks, and you can feel the back pressure with a cloth over the tail pipe, if it was awful the engine will not rev much above 3000 rpm

remember not all cats are created equal, the aftermarket is full of Chinese tat#

As above, you're not burning any oil, are you ??

Edit. Just a thought, it could be a clogged EGR valve/pipe work as it takes the egr pre cat

This car wouldn't drive up a steep hill when I bought it. But now after the first use of the cleaning product, Mannol 500 ml, it was transformed. It will cruise all day at 70 mph when  necessary. It slows a bit on long high speed hills and it feels like 5th and 6th gears are overdrive gears. But I think that is the nature of the beast. A 1333cc car doing motorway speeds for 6 hours is quite something.

The engine has a slight tick to it but it revs quite freely, and well over 3000 revs when  demanded.

I've been watching the oil consumption for a while now because the first oil filter I removed from the car was like a block of wood! I felt that it had been neglected and so far I don't think the oil consumption is excessive. After my first 5000 miles , which is now, I'm going to change the oil and filter again as this is the only way to keep these engines in good working order. I also use a fuel system cleaner all the time when filling up.

I've just used the Mannol cleaner again and I'm going to wait and see if that has cleaned out the cat sufficiently to stop the fault code appearing.

I think the engine management unit uses the input from the two O2 sensors to control the engine and therefore the secondary cat  you advised of is not responsible for producing fault codes that I am experiencing.
